Germany's Youngest College Lecturer Is Just 16 Years Old (Time.com)

This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global-news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in Tages-Anzeiger.

BIBERACH -- Carina L?mmle calls it "a little bit unfair..." Teaching at the University of Applied Sciences in?Biberach,?she is not able to drive herself to school, like most of her own students do.

At 16, she is thought to be the youngest lecturer in Germany. And no, she can't even get into the local disco in this southern German college town.

On campus, she's taken for a student. But that, she believes, may be due to the fact that she looks a little older than she is. L?mmle, in fact, is still in high school. She's an 11th grader at Biberach's Pestalozzi Gymnasium. It will be another year-and-a-half before she graduates.

On the day L?mmle gave her first lecture, the auditorium was full. There were the soon-to-graduate bachelor of science students? -- ? in their seventh semester of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology? -- ? who all had to be there. But fellow teachers were also out in force, there to see for themselves if it was true what Professor Chrystelle Mavoungou had said about L?mmle: this teenager was a "natural-born scientist," who not only knew her subject but also possessed a gift for teaching.

(SPECIAL: How Students Are Paying for College)

Mavoungou says it's not just just L?mmle's academic gifts that make her such a good teacher. "Ms L?mmle is also somebody who can keep unruly students under control."

Balancing biotech with gymnastics and piano lessons

L?mmle, who hails from the Upper Swabia region of Germany, is almost certainly the youngest college professor in Germany. She was interested in biology, physics and chemistry from the start at high school, but not to the detriment of other activities? -- ? gymnastics, tennis and piano playing are also important to her.

She has won various prizes in academic competitions and eventually earned a grant to the Student Research Center in Bad Saulgau, which is where she discovered her passion for a subject many find hard to even pronounce correctly: Massenspektrometrie, or mass spectrometry. Even fewer know the meaning of the discipline: a way of measuring the mass-to-charge ratio of charged particles.

Anybody who doubts L?mmle's pedagogical talents should ask her to describe a mass spectrometer. "Very simply put, it's a big box that makes a lot of noise when you turn it on and that enables you to break chemical substances down to their individual components."

(LIST: The Top 10 College Dropouts)

It all began on a tour she was taking of the university in Biberach, when L?mmle noticed that the mass spectrometer on hand was silent. "It's not good for the vacuum pump to leave it off for long periods of time," she told the dean, adding that "in general" you couldn't let a device that costs 500,000 euros just sit there gathering dust. The dean told her that the staff member who'd been using the device had left the university, and for months they'd been looking in vain for a qualified replacement. One thing led to another and L?mmle finally sat down for an interview with Professor Mavoungou, who says she was open-mouthed the whole time she was listening to L?mmle.

L?mmle says she definitely wants to continue working in Mavoungou's department until she graduates from high school. She also says she doesn't yet know what she wants to study at university: "I'm interested in a lot of things."

Says Mavoungou: "I will do everything in my power to keep promoting her."

Miss America confronted family pain with pageant (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? The nation's newest Miss America is a 23-year-old Wisconsin brunette who had long conversations with her family mulling whether or not to make her father's jail time for mail fraud the heart of her campaign in the beauty pageant.

While her competitors pushed platforms including promoting the health benefits of milk and protecting the environment, Laura Kaeppeler (KEP'-ler) said she wants children of incarcerated adults to feel less alone, to have mentoring and as much of a relationship with their parents as possible.

"There are many of you out there ? and I was one of them ? but it doesn't have to define you," Kaeppeler told The Associated Press after winning the crown and $50,000 scholarship on Saturday night.

To win, she said beauty queens and politicians should remember they represent all Americans, sang an opera song and strutted in a white bikini and black evening gown.

Her looks, smarts and personal vocation impressed a panel of seven celebrity judges enough to give her the next year with the title.

"What happened with my father is not what my year is going to be focused on," she said. "It's going to be focused on looking forward and moving to the future because that's what my family has done and that's what I'll encourage others to do, as well."

Kaeppeler estimated that there are more than 2 million children with a parent in jail.

Kaeppeler's father, Jeff Kaeppeler, told the AP he served 18 months in federal prison for mail fraud, a sentence his daughter said started as she was graduating high school and entering college.

Jeff Kaeppeler said when his daughter approached the family about making the personal topic her chosen platform, they supported it even though they knew it would be discussed publicly.

"It taught us that God can turn anything into good if you let him," he said. "Laura is totally on board with that idea. She let that drive her and inspire her this past year to get ready for this.

"We've seen a miracle," he said while waiting backstage for a news conference in which his daughter called him her "best friend" and briefly took pictures with him onstage.

"I love you," he whispered to her as dozens of cameras snapped photos.

Miss Oklahoma Betty Thompson came in second, while Miss New York Kaitlyn Monte placed third.

Kaeppler introduced herself to pageant viewers by referencing her home state's Green Bay Packers, the NFL's defending Super Bowl champions.

"If you're watching, Aaron Rodgers, call me," she said, referring to the football team's superstar quarterback.

She was good enough during preliminary competitions to be chosen as one of 15 semifinalists who moved on to compete in the pageant's finale. Her bid lasted through swimsuit, evening wear, talent and interview competitions that saw cuts after each round.

She was asked minutes before being crowned whether Miss America should declare her politics.

"Miss America represents everyone, so I think the message to political candidates is that they represent everyone as well," she said. "And so in these economic times, we need to be looking forward to what America needs, and I think Miss America needs to represent all."

The pageant aired live to east coast viewers on ABC and tape delayed to the rest of the country. The event was the culmination of a week of preliminary competitions and months of preparations for the titleholders from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Kaeppeler, of Kenosha, Wis., some 40 miles south of Milwaukee, said her crowning moment was a blur.

"I was crying even before my name was called," Kaeppeler said. "It was just surreal to have this honor."

She replaces Teresa Scanlan of Nebraska, who won last year at age 17 and plans to use her scholarship to pay for law school.

As the new Miss America, Kaeppeler will spend the next year touring the country to speak to different groups and raising money for the Children's Miracle Network, the Miss America Organization's official charity.

She majored in music and vocal performance at a private Lutheran liberal arts college in Kenosha, and told pageant officials initially that she planned to obtain a master's degree in speech and language pathology and become a speech therapist.

But that changed once she became Miss Wisconsin.

She now says she intends to use the scholarship money to pursue a law degree and become a family attorney who specializes in helping children of incarcerated adults.

"I really feel like I've been called to work in this," she said. "Whether I became Miss America or not, this is something that I would pursue in my career no matter what."

Guatemalan congressman slain outside party HQ (AP)

GUATEMALA CITY ? Investigators say gunmen have killed a congressman who was negotiating a switch to the law-and-order party of Guatemala's president-elect.

Oscar Valentin Leal Caal was gunned down along with his brother outside the headquarters of his current Democratic Freedom Revival party early Friday. Retired general Otto Perez Molina is being sworn in as president on Saturday and he tells the Prensa Libre newspaper that Leal had been receiving death threats for discussions about joining Perez' conservative Patriotic Party.

Perez has pledged to crack down on organized crime and Mexican drug cartels.

Chief investigator Fernando Gomez says the killers had abandoned their car near the scene of the shooting, which also wounded Leal's bodyguard.

ABC ditches 'Work It' sitcom (AP)

PASADENA, Calif. ? ABC's "Work It" is off duty.

The network said Saturday that the sitcom about two men who dress as women to look for work is off the schedule after only two episodes aired. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation had protested the series, saying it mocked the transgender community.

"Work It" attracted little interest from viewers. The Nielsen company said the second episode on Tuesday was seen by less than five million people.

GLAAD's Herndon Graddick said Saturday that it was an outdated show. But he said it started a dialogue about discrimination faced by transgender people.

International Erp Selection Sap Business One And Microsoft Dynamics Posted By: Andrew Karasev

When your company begins international expansion this is probably good news as it signals about growth and success. At the same time you have to learn such international business lessons as selecting and implementing accounting software which is compliant to foreign country tax code and has user interface in foreign language. By why dont we just deploy the same software as we have here in the headquarters? Well try to answer this and related questions in this small publication. We will give also some comparison of Microsoft Dynamics ERP line and SAP Business One. Lets begin with Localized ERP concept:

1.Localized ERP concept has two sides. First is obviously local language support in user interface and data entry. It might sound like something trivial but think about such standards as Unicode where each character is represented by two bytes. Unicode is technology allowing hieroglyph based alphabets such as Chinese, Japanese or Korean to be enabled in computing. Applications initially introduced on the software market here in the United States do not necessary support Unicode as it is technically not required here. And second aspect is compliance to foreign country legislation which is probably even more difficult to achieve and maintain as legislation is in constant change in time. Lets now take a look at offers from Microsoft Business Solutions and SAP

2.Microsoft Dynamics ERP and CRM family. It has several products including GP, AX, SL, NAV, RMS and CRM. Microsoft CRM is offered worldwide and supports numerous languages but technically it is not accounting or ERP package. From ERP side we would like to mention Dynamics AX formerly known as Axapta and Dynamics GP or former Great Plains. AX is offered in major world regions, including China, Brazil and Latin America, Europe and Russian Federation. Dynamics AX supports Unicode. You should realize that AX is geared toward upper midsize and large businesses. If you are looking for something more budget oriented then you should take a look at Dynamics GP. It is very popular in the United States and internationally. However it is available in Spanish speaking Americas, Arabic world and Quebec in French Canadian. Having said that you have to note that it is not a perfect option if your subsidiary is in Russia, China or Brazil

3.SAP Business One. We are only discussing this product in this paper and if you are thinking about NetWeaver or other options from SAP please do your homework. Comparing to Dynamics GP Business One at this time of January 2012 has also large number of add-ons however maybe lesser but still covering numerous industry niches. Good news about B1 is the fact that it is localized in major world regions and it supports Unicode. Localization is maintained directly by SAP. We believe that it is good solution for compact multinational corporation where you expect number of named users in SAP B1 do not exceed one hundred across the globe. SB1 is less expensive in software licenses and implementation hours comparing to Dynamics AX and even GP. Lets now take a look at ERP recommendations in specific country

4.Brazil. Here from brand names we see the offer from Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics AX and SAP Business One and back in 2004 our company was approached by Microsoft in Sao Paulo with the offer to localized Great Plains Dynamics version 7.0. The project was launched but later on cancelled by Microsoft as they tried to feature Navision and then again changed their mind in favor of Axapta Dynamics AX. Local competition is presented with such packages as Microsiga so make your judgment

5.Russian Federation. Both AX and SAP Business One are available and localized and we recommend you contact Microsoft Business Solutions and SAP offices in Moscow. Strong competition is coming from locally developed package 1C Accounting

6.People Republic of China. Business One and Axapta support Chinese and are localized

7.Deployment recommendations. We have seen numerous ERP implementation projects in international environment mostly for US and Canada based multinational companies. In order to retain IT and financial control we recommend you to consider hosting all the databases and application servers in the headquarters and open them to international users via Citrix or Microsoft Terminal Server

8.Please call us 1-866-304-3265, 1-269-605-4904, help@efaru.com. We have local presence in Chicagoland, Southern California, South West Michigan, Houston and Dallas areas of Texas. We serve customers USA and Canada nationwide and internationally via web sessions and phone conferences (Skype is welcomed)

Gingrich pulls back on Romney attacks in SC (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? Under pressure from some in his own party, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich pulled back his public attacks on front-runner Mitt Romney ? at least for now.

Gingrich stuck to a largely subdued stump speech during two events Thursday in South Carolina's capital, focusing instead on his plans for saving Social Security, creating jobs and boosting domestic energy production.

The often-combative Gingrich made no references to Romney, nor did he repeat his criticism of the former Massachusetts governor's record as a venture capitalist. A pro-Gingrich political action committee also has railed against Romney's tenure at the helm of Bain Capital with the release this week of a 28-minute film assailing Romney for "reaping massive rewards" as head of the private equity firm.

That line of attack has some Republicans worried that Gingrich is trying to save his faltering campaign at the party's expense. Gingrich is grasping for a campaign lifeline in South Carolina, which holds its primary Jan. 21, after a pair of disappointing fourth-place finishes in the contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce entered the debate Thursday, saying it was "foolish" for Republicans to bash Romney for his work as a venture capitalist. A top South Carolina support of GOP contender Rick Perry, who had taken to calling Romney a "vulture capitalist," said Thursday he was joining Romney's camp out of irritation over Perry's attacks.

Gingrich acknowledged drawing the ire of some conservatives. But he insisted their anger was over his calls for auditing the federal bailout of the financial industry to see who got the money and why.

"When you have crony-capitalism and politicians taking care of their friends that's not free-enterprise. That's back-door socialism," Gingrich said during remarks to older voters at a senior citizen's expo.

During a morning TV interview, Gingrich said his questions about Romney were "not the centerpiece" of his campaign in South Carolina. Still, he said it was important to question Romney's record because the former Massachusetts governor has based his campaign on the argument that he has the necessary business experience to restore the economy.

The former House speaker predicted that a win in the first-in-the-South primary would pave a path to the presidency.

"If I win South Carolina, I think I will become the Republican nominee," he said.

Last month, Gingrich made a similarly bold declaration about winning the nomination. At the time he was ahead in the polls and Romney's allies had not yet blooded Gingrich with a barrage of negative attack ads in Iowa.

South Carolina has a decades-long streak of voting for the eventual GOP nominee.

From South Carolina, Gingrich was headed to Florida to raise money and open a campaign headquarters.

Russia opposes oil sanctions against Iran (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russia opposes U.S. and possible European oil sanctions against Iran, even if Tehran presses ahead with uranium enrichment which Western powers say serves military goals, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Wednesday.

Russia, which helped build Iran's first nuclear plant in Bushehr, has in recent months increased its criticism of Tehran's nuclear program.

But Tehran's long-standing ally still opposes additional Western sanctions which are expected to hurt Iran's economy.

"Regardless of any conditions ... be those the conditions in which the Iranian nuclear program expands or others, we are against the application of such measures against Iran," he was quoted by Russia's state-run Itar-Tass news agency as saying.

He said new sanctions would not strengthen nuclear non-proliferation and could lower chances for future dialogue with Tehran on its nuclear ambitions.

"Those sanctions have nothing to do with...strengthening nuclear non-proliferation," he said. "Secondly, (the previous sanctions) against Iran have not come closer to, but have moved further away from, a negotiated solution."

Washington imposed additional sanctions on Iran last month and the EU is expected to agree a ban on imports of Iranian oil this month in addition to the existing four rounds of U.N. sanctions.

Iran confirmed this week it had started uranium enrichment near the Shi'ite Muslim holy city of Qom, prompting a stern Western reaction and a rebuke from the Russian Foreign Ministry saying it regretted the decision and was concerned about it.

    GRAVE MISTAKE

Tehran, which says its nuclear program serves peaceful goals, reacted to Western sanctions by threatening to shut the Strait of Hormuz, the outlet for 40 percent of the world's traded oil, if its oil exports were targeted, raising tensions in the region.

Ryabkov warned the West against escalation in the narrow strait linking the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf.

"A military operation against Iran would be a grave mistake, a brutal miscalculation," he said. "The consequences of such a hypothetical development would be far-reaching for regional and global security."

Iran carried out naval exercises earlier this month in the Persian Gulf close to the strait, guarded by a U.S.-led international naval strike force. The United States said it would use force if Iran blocked the strait for navigation.

Ryabkov said the door for six-power talks on Iran's nuclear program remained open, a year after they stalled with Tehran saying its right to enrich uranium was non-negotiable.
