China: Landslide buries 83 in Tibet gold mine area

BEIJING (AP) ? No signs of life have been detected at a gold mining site in a mountainous area of Tibet more than 24 hours after a massive landslide buried 83 workers, Chinese state media said Saturday.

The state-run China Central Television said more than 2,000 rescuers have been dispatched to Lhasa's Maizhokunggar county to search for the buried.

About 2 million cubic meters (2.6 million cubic yards) of mud, rock and debris swept through the area as the workers were resting and covered an area measuring around 4 square kilometers (1.5 square miles), CCTV said.

The miners worked for a subsidiary of the China National Gold Group Corp., a state-owned enterprise and the country's largest gold producer. A woman who answered the call at its Beijing headquarters Saturday said she could not provide any information.

The disaster is likely to inflame critics of Chinese rule in Tibet who say Beijing's interests are driven by the region's mineral wealth and strategic position and come at the expense of the region's delicate ecosystem and Tibetans' Buddhist culture and traditional way of life.

The reports said at least two of the buried workers were Tibetan while most of the workers were believed to be ethnic Han Chinese, a reflection of how such large projects often create an influx of the majority ethnic group into the region.

The more than 2,000 police, firefighters, soldiers and medics deployed to the site, about 70 kilometers (45 miles) east of Lhasa, the regional capital, conducted searches armed with devices to detect signs of life and accompanied by sniffer dogs, reports said.

Around 30 excavators were also digging away at the site late Friday as temperatures fell to just below freezing.

The reports said the landslide was caused by a "natural disaster" but did not provide specifics. It was unclear why the first news reports of the landslide came out several hours after it occurred.

China's President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang ordered authorities to "spare no efforts" in their rescue work, Xinhua said.

Doctors at the local county hospital said they had been told to prepare to receive survivors but none had arrived. "We were ordered to make all efforts to receive the injured," said a doctor who gave only her surname, Ge, in the hospital's emergency section.

On Saturday morning, a hospital staff member who gave her surname of Wu said it had received no one from the landslide, dead or alive.

The Chinese government has been encouraging development of mining and other industries in long-isolated Tibet as a way to promote its economic growth and raise living standards. The region has abundant deposits of copper, chromium, bauxite and other precious minerals and metals and is one of fast-growing China's last frontiers.

Tibet remains among China's poorest regions despite producing a large share of its minerals. A key source of anti-Chinese anger is complaints by local residents that they get little of the wealth extracted by government companies, most of which flows to distant Beijing.

In 2008, unhappiness with Chinese rule spilled over into deadly riots that engulfed Lhasa and an anti-government uprising that swept many Tibetan communities. To quell the unrest, Beijing poured security forces into Tibetan areas and has kept them there since, giving the western China region the feel of a military garrison and further alienating many Tibetans.

In recent years, more than 100 Tibetans have set themselves on fire to protest the stifling security presence and call for greater religious freedom.

Outcast black holes surround the Milky Way

WANDERING naked or in tattered cloaks of dark matter, as many as 2000 black holes booted from their homes now live on the outskirts of the Milky Way. That's the prediction of new computer simulations, which looked at how our galaxy grew through mergers with smaller galaxies.

Theory says that every galaxy may have a black hole at its centre. As galaxies merge, their central black holes merge too, building a supermassive black hole millions of times the mass of the sun.

But collisions between black holes create gravitational waves, which can kick a newly merged black hole out of its host galaxy.

Valery Rashkov and Piero Madau of the University of California, Santa Cruz, ran simulations that show 70 to 2000 of these outcasts may now linger in the halo of the Milky Way, depending on the properties of the objects that collided (arxiv.org/abs/1303.3929).

Some might have been stripped bare, while others may carry a few clusters of stars and dark matter, says Avi Loeb of Harvard University, who has proposed a similar idea. Though faint, these star clusters should be observable with current or future telescopes. Finding them may tell us more about early black hole growth.

Business Insider's Owen Thomas Is In Talks To Be The New Editor At ReadWrite

owen thomasMy old boss Owen Thomas is very close to becoming the new editor-in-chief at the SAY Media-owned tech site ReadWrite, according to sources with knowledge of the company. I'm hearing that it's not quite a done deal, but that it's looking very likely. Naturally, I called Owen to ask if this was the case, but he declined to comment. A SAY spokesperson told me, "There's obviously a lot of interest in ReadWrite. There are a lot of good candidates in the mix, and no one's been hired yet." (Just to reiterate ? I'm not saying he's been hired, just that the discussions are pretty far along.)

GWH News and Notes: Ohio Valley Wrestling Episode 710 Recap

From Jimmie Daniel:

This is the recap for Ohio Valley Wrestling TV Episode 710 to air in Louisville 3/30. Next Saturday 4/6, not only does the next Saturday Night Special take place but also OVW TV is moving to a new station in Louisville, WBNA-21 the ION affiliate and will air Saturdays at noon ET. OUR OVW Announce Team this week is Dean "San Juan" Hill", "Anchorman" Gilbert Corsey and "Rocky Mountain Mouth" Michael Titus, who also is doing the ring announcing.

The Coalition ( "The Washington Generals" Crimson & Jason Wayne, "Squad Alpha" Jack Black & Joe Coleman, "Squad Alpha" Shiloh Jonze & Raul Lamotta, plus the Spanish Moss Guy) comes to the ring. Wayne lines up the troops then Crimson calls out OUR OVW Champion Doug Williams. Crimson states that he is the number one contender for Williams' title since he defeated Jamin Olivencia last week (albeit with help from Williams). Crimson brings up Williams' deal with the Coalition that was agreed upon in a secret meeting a few weeks ago, where whoever from the Coalition prevented Olivencia from getting a one-on-one match with Williams, that person would get a title shot. Crimson is impatient and wants his title shot now! Williams takes issue with "now", saying he is like a Swiss clock and needs time to properly prepare. Crimson stops him, saying time was not addressed in any of their negotiations! Crimson shows us a survival knife as Williams again states that he needs to warm up and stretch but reluctantly agrees to do the match later tonight. Wayne then takes the mic, proclaiming the Coalition as the greatest anti-terrorist force ever assembled! He then asks the four squad members individually (and with long nicknames for everyone) why they joined up the group. The answers generally revolved around eliminating terrorists. Wayne then asks Spanish Moss Guy (who he calls "Gilley-man" -like Mickey Gilley?) the same question and gestures his response, implying he is looking out for something or someone. The Coalition salutes and leaves.

Match #1: "VIP" Joe Rosa (w/The Entourage) vs "White Kryptonite" Eddie Diamond (w/Timmy Danger)

Entourage consists of four unidentified others, one of whom is holding a champagne bucket. Diamond reminds Danger that this is all about Epiphany, whom Diamond is carrying a picture of as he enters the ring. Titus accuses Danger of copying his hairdo, lol. Rosa has his way early as Diamond seems unfocused despite Danger's best efforts, including climbing up on the apron to show Diamond the picture.

Rosa grabs the picture and kisses it before ripping it in two. This angers Diamond, who Thesz presses Rosa and beats on him. An Entourage guy hand Rosa the bucket and hits Diamond with it but ref Josh Ashcraft is distracted as Danger is confronting the other three entourage guys. Epiphany runs in and clotheslines Rosa then Diamond covers him for the pin.

In the back, Williams is talking to Jay Bradley about possibly having his back later but Jonze and Lamotta sneak up on them as they are doing recon on Williams, who runs away. Dean is not sympathetic to Williams' plight since he did make a deal with Crimson (who Dean refers to as a snake) and the Coalition. Titus says that Williams was desperate to make sure he didn't have to face Jamin Olivencia again and was willing to do anything to make sure that happened.

Rudy Switchblade comes to the ring with a ref Jordan Barker. Rudy is tired of all the running and hiding by Jesse Godderz and wants their ongoing match/saga/tiff/squabble to end tonight! Gilbert opines that the 24/7 match got paused. Rudy says he didn't think it would take this long to kick Jesse's butt.

Match #2:"Best Rudy Ever" Rudy Switchblade vs "Mr. Pec-tacular" Jesse Godderz

Jesse wanders out to ringside and Rudy dives on him for 2 as they commence brawling all around ringside. Back in, Jesse yanks Rudy out of the corner and poses but Rudy rolls him up for 2 then neckbreakers him. Jesse tries to leave and Rudy follows but Jesse pops back through the curtain and hits Rudy with a stagelight for 2. Jesse rams Rudy into the announce table and covers him for 2 then drags him around ringside and gives him some kneelifts. Jesse applies an abdominal stretch until Rudy hiptosses out. Jesse grabs a chair and slides it in the ring and has a seat in front of Rudy, who is on his back. Rudy drop toeholds him into the chair then hits him in the ribs with it. Meanwhile, Jay Bradley and James "Moose" Thomas brawl their way to ringside and are joined by "Smooth" Johnny Spade. Titus says Spade makes coffee nervous. All five men get mixed together and brawl to the back.

Paredyse is on the phone with Brandon "Espy" Espinosa, who has apparently slipped and fell in the bathtub, so he won't be there for Paredyse's match. Paredyse asks about Just Chris but is told Chris tripped over her tutu and won't be there either. Paradyse thinks this is an omen.

Match #3: Paredyse vs Albert Einstein Baxter II

Albert is intro'd as being from Princeton then trips as he climbs into the ring. Paredyse taunts Albert a lot, even pulling off Albert's bowtie and sticking it down the front of his tights. Titus notes that Paredyse has a vicious side and is showing it here. Gilbert says the Ivy League-educated Lambda Lambda Lambda (Albert and his brother Stephon J Baxter III) have studied wrestling a lot but it hasn't transferred to any success thus far. Paredyse gives Albert a wedgie then removes Albert's glasses as a video comes up of Brittany Devore bathed in red light. The Mobile Homers (Adam Revolver & "Man-Beast" Ted McNaler) keep sticking their heads in the picture to wonder what's going on, lol. Anyway, Brittany declares that she will hunt down Paredyse, Espy, and Chris!. Back to the match, Albert fires up on the spooked Paredyse, who manages to pull out a win via a legsweep.

Williams seeks out OUR OVW Director of Operations Michael (not PS) Hayes but instead encounters Trailer Park Trash. Williams asks about procedures for contender matches but TPT brushes him off, saying he only does paperwork around here now. Coleman and Black sneak up on Williams, who slips off into another room.

Match #4: "Diamond Steel" Ryan Howe (w/guitar) vs OUR OVW TV Champion Rockstar Spud

Dean compares Spud to Bill Dundee and suggests that Howe and Spud would be quite a team! Spud opens with a flurry and dropkicks Howe out but pulls up on a dive when Howe moves out of the way. Spud holds the ropes open so Howe can climb back in. Spud escapes a headlock but Howe catapults him into the corner. Howe drops and pops for 2 but Taeler Hendrix wanders out. She cheers for Howe as the discussion turns to her thinking Howe has been sending her gifts but he hasn?t confirmed or denied it. Howe slams Spud to the mat and "tunes up the band" before dropping an elbow on Spud for 2. Heidi Lovelace comes out to confront Taeler, since Heidi also is enamored with Howe. Taeler gestures for her to talk to the hand! "King of Pink" Dylan Bostic comes out to also confront Taeler, thus completing the "love box" (as opposed to a love triangle) and leading to a Dean and Gilbert breaking the seal on some soap opera puns! Howe steps out to argue with Bostic and gets counted out. Howe yells at Taeler, she is sad but Heidi is happy. Meanwhile Spud talks to the ref and gets him to restart the match, since it is assumed that he doesn't want to win the match this way. So Howe yelled at poor Taeler for nothing! Spud opens up with another flurry as it is noted that the fans are not sure who to cheer for. Back from break, Howe suplexes Spud for 2 then kneelifts him. Spud rolls out as Gilbert notes both the 10-minute limit and the $1000 for the successful title defense. Back in, Howe tries a sleeper but Spud rolls him up for 2. Dean says Spud has gained respect in his eyes for agreeing to restart the match. Howe slams Spud and goes for the blockbuster but Spud gets up and Howe leapfrogs him. Spud tiltawhirls Howe out then somersaults out onto him. Back in, Spud top-rope splashes Howe for 2 but takes a neckbreaker. Howe comes up empty on a swanton and Spud DDTs him for the pin.

In the back, Tony Gunn & "Triple R Superstar" Randy Royal have watched all this. Apparently Royal is going to challenge Spud for the title next week as Gunn states that "we're going to win the TV title". the fun is interrupted by "The Great" Cliff Compton (still carrying the retired belt) who says that HE will have a rematch with Spud next week and once again become OUR OVW Multimedia TV Champion! Compton says it will be so exciting that Royal will have another heart attack!

Match #5: Crimson (w/The Coalition) vs OUR OVW Champion Doug Williams

Bell rings but before we get any action, out comes Jamin Olivencia in street clothes followed by Ashcraft and Hayes (who is sporting a bow tie). Jamin has some breaking news for Williams then turns the mic over to Hayes. According to Hayes, there is good news and great news for Williams: the good-that this match isn't going to happen, and the "great"-since Williams did such a good job explaining the rules a few weeks ago when he got the OVW Board of Directors to overturn his title loss to Jamin that Hayes applied the same rules here. After Ashcraft affirms that Williams did indeed physically assault him last week, Hayes rules that Crimson should have been disqualified, making Jamin the winner of the match and number one contender! Williams storms off as Crimson gets all up in Hayes' face and demands to know why he changed the decision. Jamin steps in but Crimson shoves him. Jamin spears Crimson but gets bum rushed by the Coalition. OUR OVW Tag Team Champions "New School Gut Checkers" (Alex Silva & Sam Shaw) hit the ring to help Jamin out, quickly followed by "Welsh Colossus" Rob Terry, Gunn, and Royal. Mucho brawling occurs as the show goes off.

THOUGHTS: I'll admit it, I spent the first 53 minutes wondering where Michael Hayes was. I enjoyed seeing Williams getting the tables turned on him and also the Coalition getting some collateral damage. Liked Danger motivating Diamond, it was nice to see some sort of positive acknowledgement from Epiphany. Perhaps the ongoing Switchblade/Godderz feud may survive a nuclear war? Can't wait for Brittany's revenge on Paredyse while the Mobile Homers wonder what the heck is going on, lol. Have mixed feeling about Spud, no mic work, he just showed up and won the TV title but he has no comments or anything? I guess "love square" might be more appropriate, because when I hear "love box" I recall reading letters to Penthouse! Nothing has been set in stone for Saturday Night Special. Anyway, I found this show quite entertaining, so it's another thumbs up.

Researchers Find Decline in Cancer After Plant Shutdown

Two researchers have found a significant reduction in cancer in women, Hispanics and children since the closure of the Rancho Seco nuclear reactor project in Sacramento County more than 23 years ago. Here are the details.

* The results of the study titled "Long-term Local Cancer Reductions Following Nuclear Plant Shutdown" has been published in the peer-reviewed medical journal Biomedicine International.

* This is the first long-term study of the full-population health impacts of the closure of a nuclear reactor, according to the study's authors. For the research, the official California Cancer Registry data on cancer incidence for Sacramento County, with a population of about 1.4 million as of 2010, was compared to the incidences in the rest of the state.

* Key findings of the new study include 4,319 fewer cancers over 20 years and declines in cancer incidence in 28 of 31 categories, including women, Hispanics and children.

* The results show declines in cancer for both males and females, though the change was four times greater in females than in males. Among the types of cancer with a significantly decreased frequency were female breast cancer and thyroid.

* Between the years of 1988-94, Sacramento County's child cancer rate dropped 13.6 percent while the rate remained virtually unchanged for the rest of the state, the study found.

* Co-author Janette Sherman, an internist and toxicologist, stated that the closure of the plant "translates into many millions saved in direct medical costs, reduction of productivity lost, and additional savings associated with the value of a human life."

* According to epidemiologist and executive director of the Radiation and Public Health Project Joseph Mangano, co-author, "The need for more knowledge is great, given how many reactors are near major population centers. San Onofre, in southern California, has 8.4 million persons living within 50 miles. Indian Point, in southern New York, has 17.2 million within 50 miles."

* Mangano added that more information is needed about the long-term impact of low-level radiation from both idled and currently operating reactors.

* The results mirror earlier studies conducted over shorter periods of time which also showed declining cancer rates and declining rates of infant mortality two years after the shutdown of nuclear plants in the U.S.

* According to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission , the Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station, owned by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, began commercial operation in April 1975. In 1989, as the result of a public referendum, the district decided to permanently shut the plant down.

* All 493 spent fuel assemblies from the plant are in dry storage onsite.

Snoop Lion On Gay Marriage, 'Reincarnated,' Diplo, 'Cheaters' And A New National Anthem

News that Snoop Dogg had taken a smoker's sabbatical from West Coast party rap was met with a healthy skepticism, bemusement and even derision when it first started making its way around the web last summer. But now, Snoop has settled into his newest incarnation: Snoop Lion, a peace-loving, violence-hating reggae artist who claims to be a descendent of Bob Marley.

His transformation was the subject of "Reincarnated," a VICE documentary that traced the 41-year-old rapper's trip to Jamaica and subsequent cultural baptism. The film offers a fresh look at Snoop, best known for hits like "Ain't No Fun" and "Drop It Like It's Hot," and makes up what it may lack in cohesion with tender glimpses at a man who appears to be pondering his place in the world.

The result of said introspection is a reggae album produced by Major Lazer and also titled "Reincarnated." The record features songs like "No Guns Allowed," on which Snoop teams with his daughter Cori B. and Drake for an anti-arms statement that the Snoop of 15 years ago would have bristled at.

But it's not just guns that he's willing to talk about. HuffPost Entertainment spoke to Snoop as the Supreme Court heard testimony on Proposition 8, a California amendment banning gay marriage -- a topic the newly minted Lion wasn't afraid to tackle.

"People can do what they want and as they please," he said. "Satisfy yourself accordingly. I have no issues with nobody, I live for me and I live my life doing what I do, so you should have the right to do whatever you want to do."

Ahead, Snoop dishes on an array of subjects close to his heart, including working with Diplo, watching "Cheaters" and which of his songs he feels could be America's new national anthem.

In the beginning of the documentary, you say you're going to Jamaica to find a truth. What truth were you seeking?
I didn't know what to find. I had been to Jamaica many times and I just stayed in my hotel room and never really ventured out. So, I knew that this time I wanted to venture out and expect the unexpected. Whatever I saw or did, I was willing to expect.

Are there any other countries or cultures you want to explore in a similar way?
I don't know off hand just yet, but I know I had a great time going through Jamaica, because it was a blessing for me musically, spiritually and physically.

Were you ever nervous at all?
Naw, I'm never nervous. Always ready. Stay ready so I don't have to get ready. "Nervous" has never been one of my traits. I like to be prepared and go do what I have to do. I love meeting pressure with performance.

I saw you speak at Miss Lily's in New York when you announced the project, and you spoke about how folks call you "Uncle Snoop" in the rap game. Have rappers you know been supportive?
Oh yeah, man. They love and appreciate it, because a lot of them have seen me go from a young man to a full-grown man, and really be able to lead our troops in the right direction. But I didn't really have the music to lead them. So now that I have the music with a positive connection to it, it's going to be easier to lead everybody to the promise.

Nate Dogg's death figures prominently in the movie, and some of the documentary's most touching moments include you discussing the effect it had on you. When did that reflection happen, and would you say your experiences in Jamaica changed how you saw the events that made you who you are?
That was all after the fact. We had time to reflect on [the death]. But yeah, it just opened my third eye and gave me a chance to really examine what I am and who I am, and why am I doing this? Why am I so blessed with the position of being a lyricist that people listen to? Am I going to take advantage of this power and put out something that means something and does something, or am I just going to continue to make party rap?

In the film, you spend a good amount of time explaining why you rapped about certain subjects, like pimping.Do you ever get tired of explaining things like why rappers rap about crime, and do you think American culture will ever understand that those raps came from what it was like to live in that world?
No, never. To me, the proof is in the pudding. I could do a million interviews, but if I don't make good music, ain't nobody going to want to do a fucking interview. So my thing is that as long as I do my job and do the music side of it, the interviews and all that comes are a part of the job. I've learned how to deal with it, I've been doing this over 20 years and I've kind of mastered it.

Are you familiar with Diplo's other music? Are there any artists on Mad Decent you particularly enjoy?
Everything Diplo does, I'm down with. I love his energy, his production and his spirit in the studio. For me to give him the right to do my whole record and have control over that says a lot about me and his trust. It means that I trust that he knows what he's doing. There are a lot of artists I would love to work with, and I'll wait for the time for him to pop it on me and bob it on me and let me do it.

So there's nobody you'd want to put out there right now? I guess there's no need, since you're close, you don't need us to tell him.
Everybody is family. We are all connected. Who would you love to see me perform?

This is a bit obvious because he's so hot right now, but I think it would be fun to see you on a Baauer track, even if it's just doing some drops for these guys -- sort of like what Baauer and Just Blaze did with Jay-Z drops. You have a really distinctive voice, and at some of these DJ shows or festivals, those moments can be really fun and powerful.
Gotcha. I like that. I'm going to check into that for you.

You're pretty vocal about enjoying your mancave. Aside from smoking, what sort of stuff do you do in there? Any shows you watch?
I watch the first "48 Hours," after that I watch "Cheaters." [Laughs] I watch basketball, football, ESPN. I like "Love & Hip-Hop," "Real Husbands of Hollywood" and don't forget about my cartoons, man.

You also have a DJ career. How did you decide that's something you should be doing?
That's DJ Snoopadelic. He's the DJ. He loves playing records and making the people dance. I have alter egos and different personalities, and that's one of them. My DJ Snoopadelic gig is more about me not being a rapper but me playing music and finding out what's hot, and playing music that makes me and you feel good at the same time.

Did you have a good time down at Ultra?
I'm always impressed with what I see at these big festivals. I always learn something new every time, so I'm going to take a little game and put it with my thing and make it work.

There was an official petition on the White House website to make R. Kelly's "Ignition (Remix)" the new national anthem. How do you feel about that, and if you had to pick one of your songs instead, which would you choose?
"Young, Wild and Free." [Sings] "So what we get drunk, so what we smoke weed." That's the perfect song with your hand on your heart. I could just see all the kids at 8 in the morning in front of the flag. [Sings again] So what we get drunk, so what we smoke weed, we are young, wild and free."

What's the word on Dr. Dre and "Detox"?
[Laughs] I mean? If it was up to me, I'd have been put that motherfucker out! I don't know when he's going to put it out. I get asked that question more than I get asked anything. He has great music that's connected to that album. He's got great songs -- over six, seven years of material that I don't know why he won't put out. Hopefully he'll do what's necessary, which is to give people what they want -- a great record.

It seemed like a big deal for you to smoke with Bunny Wailer in Jamiaca, for obvious reasons. Is there one person you shared that experience with that you took a lot away from?
Me and Quincy Jones got a special bond, man. Not on smoking, but just on a bond, like brother-to-brother; fellowship, wisdom and guidance. I cherish my relationship with him.

U.S. Navy Funding Development Of Giant Jellyfish Robot

We've already seen drones shaped like various animals, including humming birds and dogs. Next is one made to look (and swim) like a jellyfish.

Cyro, which measures 5 feet 7 inches in diameter and weighs 170 pounds, moves through the water effortlessly, researchers say. Its design is based on Cyanea capillata, the giant lion's mane jellyfish indigenous to the cold waters of Arctic, the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

It is being developed at a lab at Virginia Tech, funded by a grant from the U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center and the Office of Naval Research. There's a video at Geek.com, which says:

"Cryo consists of a central core of components in a waterproof shell connected to eight moving arms. Draped over this is a large and soft piece of white silicone, which comes into contact with each of the arms and remains flexible. Combined, the arms and silicone act as a propulsion system mimicking how real jellyfish move around."

Discovery News says it will be used for "ocean monitoring, exploration, and even clean-up in the case of an oil spill":

" ... the team hopes Cyro can operate underwater continuously for weeks or even months. That's the goal anyway. Next the engineers say they want to refine the robot, reducing energy consumption and improving its swimming abilities in collaboration with several partner universities."

The article doesn't say, but considering where the source of funding for the five-year project and Cyro's superb ability to camouflage at sea, it would be a fair guess that it's being considered for more than just taking water temperatures and cleanup.

Politico SL News ? Fond memories of Fourah Bay College

By Peagie Woobay-Foday

Come October, when the heavy rains pour without stopping us, young and old, with all the fights at Model junction to get on the SU bus, which rarely came, or the overloaded taxis, we rush up Mount Aureol to achieve higher education.

A hill so promising and rewarding?

Down the ?blocks?, the boys strive hard to make it?.e nor easy don block, wata wata food nar di the canteen, blackout to name a few, but they burn their midnight candles well and the results are there?..

And for sure up & down? the difficult winding numerous steps leading to Lati Hyde and Beethoven, the ladies courageously go to classes, cook in their rooms and study hard to make their grades?

An interesting place Mount Aureol, A world of its own with the best supermarket in the world ?Third World? open 24hrs, 1st class library, though many important pages in the books for students reference work have been torn by their own very dear brothers and sisters before them (a miracle we still do our term papers and make our grades)

The Engineering students with their surveying materials at Mary Kinsley ? binoculars etc giving us the hope that the roads leading to FBC will be enlarged or new constructions may spring up after their reports, but this never happens.

The Aureol Times ? WOW! A newspaper that comes out once a year; a very scary one with all underground activities on campus revealed. But it is great and the last edition comes out during my time, and there is even ?a peagie woobay trophy? now that?s funny.

The famous night club ? SU Building ? where we can dance everyday of the week and still go to classes the next day. That building must have been giving us the energy.

The ?Bonfire? celebrating Bob Marley Night on 11 May. Only on this campus can we do that.

The march towards State House demanding student rights, famous ?Bus Tick? where all the gossip is done. The sport season, morning jogging time with singing and dancing of various halls. Bai Bureh Hall (my hall), the best hall on campus ?we de nar ya oh, we de kekte?. It is so much fun going up and down Court right.

The various social clubs on campus, fraternities, sororities with elegant dinners and speeches teaching us ethics in life after college. All done peacefully. We shall give back to the University, we say, to help improve in our little ways from funds raised through our clubs. Painting of ?bus tick? building kiosk for students, putting dust bins on campus?

The various grants students can benefit from ? Catholic scholarship, SLG as we call Sierra Leone Government Grant-in-aid, etc. I have a Catholic scholarship and my roomy has SLG. So we are sort of lucky and can survive the month. But not all are so lucky??

The debates at Mary Kinsley (great vocabularies/jargons we have that I can still recognize the writings of most FBC Alumni) and the drama concerts?.

Plus, of course, the best-organized well-run SU governments. The SU presidential campaigns, debates, candidates giving their vibes, we bombarding them with questions?.I long for the State of the Union addresses. We listen attentively as we are informed of how the Union is run, taking care of our affairs (accountability and all). It is so serious that I wonder what happens to these same people when they come down from Mount Aureol and do not keep to what they do up there. That hill must have something and I am wondering if the national government should not relocate its offices to Mount Aureol?

I must confess that I have a swell time at FBC, learn a lot. This great institution forms and shapes me for good and I owe most of my knowledge to Mount Aureol! Going through the hands of Professors like Dr Eustace Palmer, Dr Kadie Sesay (whose pure British English phonetics, I must admit, scared the hell out of me on the first day, so much so that I thought I would not survive in the English department), Mr Kenneth Osho, Dr Patrick Bernard, Mr Earnest Cole (now a Doctor) all of the English department. Then of course the French dept professors like Dr Bai-Sheka, Dr Lulu Wright, Dr Yillah, Dr Denis Bright, Mr Solomon Fofana and Mr Saidu Bangura. And in the linguistics dept, Mr Hasholu-Luke. RIP.

As the saying goes ?all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy?. We work hard and party hard so finishing with a Honors degree in French and a solid linguistics package is the best I can do???.

And in my dreams, I just hope that these memories I have, these good memories, maybe shared by the current students of this Great University. That the students will be united and work hard and live life on campus as it should be without violence but with fun.

That the campus will be enlarged and modernized. That I will be able to realize one dream, a dream of helping out at the library with good modern books.

God Bless Mama Salone.

Scientists image deep magma beneath Pacific seafloor volcano

Mar. 27, 2013 ? Since the plate tectonics revolution of the 1960s, scientists have known that new seafloor is created throughout the major ocean basins at linear chains of volcanoes known as mid-ocean ridges. But where exactly does the erupted magma come from?

Researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego now have a better idea after capturing a unique image of a site deep in the Earth where magma is generated.

Using electromagnetic technology developed and advanced at Scripps, the researchers mapped a large area beneath the seafloor off Central America at the northern East Pacific Rise, a seafloor volcano located on a section of the global mid-ocean ridges that together form the largest and most active chain of volcanoes in the solar system. By comparison, the researchers say the cross-section area of the melting region they mapped would rival the size of San Diego County.

Details of the image and the methods used to capture it are published in the March 28 issue of the journal Nature.

"Our data show that mantle upwelling beneath the mid-ocean ridge creates a deeper and broader melting region than previously thought," said Kerry Key, lead author of the study and an associate research geophysicist at Scripps. "This was the largest project of its kind, enabling us to image the mantle with a level of detail not possible with previous studies."

The northern East Pacific Rise is an area where two of the planet's tectonic plates are spreading apart from each another. Mantle rising between the plates melts to generate the magma that forms fresh seafloor when it erupts or freezes in the crust.

Data for the study was obtained during a 2004 field study conducted aboard the research vessel Roger Revelle, a ship operated by Scripps and owned by the U.S. Navy.

The marine electromagnetic technology behind the study was originally developed in the 1960s by Charles "Chip" Cox, an emeritus professor of oceanography at Scripps, and his student Jean Filloux. In recent years the technology was further advanced by Steven Constable and Key. Since 1995 Scripps researchers have been working with the energy industry to apply this technology to map offshore geology as an aid to exploring for oil and gas reservoirs.

"We have been working on developing our instruments and interpretation software for decades, and it is really exciting to see it all come together to provide insights into the fundamental processes of plate tectonics," said Constable, a coauthor of the paper and a professor in the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps. "It was really a surprise to discover that melting started so deep in the mantle -- much deeper than was expected."

Key believes the insights that electromagnetics provides will continue to grow as the technology matures and data analysis techniques improve (last week Key and his colleagues announced the use of electromagnetics in discovering a magma lubricant for the planet's tectonic plates).

"Electromagnetics is really coming of age as a tool for imaging the earth," said Key. "Much of what we know about the crust and mantle is a result of using seismic techniques. Now electromagnetic technology is offering promise for further discoveries."

Key also has future plans to apply electromagnetic technology to map subglacial lakes and groundwater in the polar regions.

In addition to Key and Constable, coauthors of the paper include Lijun Liu of the University of Illinois and Anne Pommier of Arizona State University.

The study was supported by the National Science Foundation and the Seafloor Electromagnetic Methods Consortium at Scripps.

The Towerlight ? New family, same Seder

Freshman Stephanie Lande has never spent Passover away from her family. However, since she?s from New York, Lande wasn?t able to return home to celebrate with her family this year.

?It?s a little hard because I?m not with family but at the same time it?s a new experience,? the occupational therapy major said.

Lande didn?t allow her distance from home stop her from celebrating Passover, a Jewish holiday composed of two dinners known as Seders during which members of the Jewish faith remember their ancestors? escape from Egypt.

?It?s a holiday in which you spend time with family and it?s hard not eating by their side but at the same time like you?re remembering what your ancestors and everyone else went through to get you the freedom that you currently have,? Lande said.

For first-time college students, observing Passover away from their families may seem intimidating, but Lande said this year she was able to celebrate with friends, friends whom she calls her ?second family.?

During the first Seder Monday, March 25, Lande went home with her friend, freshman Maggy Kay.

?It was good because it was a new experience and I felt very welcome, very comfortable there,? Lande said. ?Even though I wasn?t with my family, I felt personally welcome with her family.?

Kay, an elementary and special education major, said that she considers Passover a home-oriented holiday and welcomed Lande to her home.

?It is really a family holiday,? she said. ?You don?t really go to services.?

Though she went home for the first night of Seder, Kay said it would be too difficult to work around classes to go home on both nights.

?I think it will be different but I think it will be interesting to see how other people experience Seder,? Kay said.

Both Kay and Lande participated in Hillel?s observation of second Seder. They said that they feel Hillel, a college-campus- based Jewish organization, has become a support group for them.

About 10 percent of Towson?s student population is Jewish, according to Towson Hillel?s website, and Lande said new students should not be afraid to find friends with whom they can share events like Passover.

?If you want to join a group such as Shabbat or Hillel, you should because they?ll be your second family and they?ll always be there for you no matter what,? she said.

Israeli military responds to fire from Syria

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's army said it fired a guided missile into Syria on Sunday, destroying a military post after gunfire flew across the border and struck an Israeli vehicle.

The shooting along the frontier in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights was one of the most serious incidents between the countries since Syria's civil war erupted two years ago. Israel has carefully watched the violence from the sidelines, but has returned fire on several occasions.

It was not immediately clear whether the Syrian troops had fired into the Golan intentionally or whether the vehicle had been hit by stray gunfire. In either case, Israel said it held Syrian President Bashar Assad's government responsible.

"The Syrian regime is responsible for every breach of sovereignty. We will not allow the Syrian army or any other groups to violate Israel's sovereignty in any way," Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said.

Israel's military said soldiers were on routine patrol in the Golan when they were fired upon early Sunday, hours after a military vehicle driving along the frontier between the two countries was hit and lightly damaged Saturday evening. It said Israel responded early Sunday with a Tamuz guided missile.

"We were forced to act in a targeted way and to attack and destroy the post from which this (gunfire) took place," Israeli military chief Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz said Sunday. "We will continue to operate in the Golan Heights with reason and caution, but where determination and assertive and offensive action is needed, that will also take place."

Israel captured the Golan in the 1967 Mideast war and subsequently annexed the territory in a move that has not been internationally recognized.

Since Syria's civil war broke out in March 2011, errant mortar shells or machine gun fire have landed in the Golan a number of times. Israel believes most of the cases have been accidental, but it has responded on several occasions.

Israel is worried that the embattled Assad regime may try to draw the Jewish state into the fighting in an attempt to divert attention from the civil war. Gantz has also warned that Syrian rebels, who have captured a number of villages on the Syrian side of the Golan, could turn their attention to Israel if they defeat Assad.

Sunday's violence comes days after Israel restored ties with Turkey. Relations between the countries, once close allies, had steadily deteriorated following a 2010 Israeli naval raid on a Turkish ship trying to break Israel's blockade on Gaza. Israeli commandos killed nine Turkish activists in the operation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday that concerns over the crisis in Syria, which borders both Israel and Turkey, led to the reconciliation.

He said Israel and Turkey would need to communicate over the worsening situation, noting fears that Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons could reach militant groups bordering the two countries.

Israel has expressed concern that Syria's chemical arsenal could fall into the hands of militants like Lebanon's Hezbollah, an Assad ally, or Islamic extremists fighting among the rebels battling Assad.

Earlier this year, the U.S. said Israel carried out an airstrike in Syria on a convoy believed to be transporting sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles to Hezbollah. Israel has all but admitted to carrying out the airstrike, but never formally confirmed it.

Samsung ships ATIV Smart PC Pro with AT&T LTE, 13-inch Series 9 Premium with 1080p screen

Samsung ships ATIV Smart PC Pro with AT&T LTE, bumps the Series 9 Ultrabook to 1080p

Samsung's ATIV Smart PC has been giving Americans a blend of LTE data and Windows 8 for some time, but we're sure that some would like a little more oomph. The company agrees -- it just released a version of the ATIV Smart PC Pro equipped with AT&T-capable LTE. If you've got a not-insubstantial $1,600 to commit to a tablet, you can stay online beyond WiFi while wielding a laptop-grade 1.7GHz Core i5, 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD and as much as eight hours of runtime.

Ultrabook fans aren't left out from Samsung's upgrades. A newer Premium trim level for the 13-inch Series 9 swaps out the regular 1,600 x 900 LCD for a full 1080p screen. The higher resolution bumps the price to a slightly intimidating $1,900, although Samsung does outfit the PC with a 1.9GHz Core i7, 4GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Between this and the Smart PC Pro, it's safe to say that the company can accommodate the highest of the high end.

First lady latest whose private info leaked online

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The first lady and the vice president are among the latest public figures to have their private information posted on a mysterious website, and the Secret Service has joined the investigation into the postings that include documents from people ranging from rapper Jay-Z to the head of the FBI.

The site includes Social Security numbers, credit reports, addresses and phone numbers.

It bears an Internet suffix originally assigned to the Soviet Union, and many of the pages feature unflattering pictures or taunting messages of the person featured. Others whose information is posted include pop star Britney Spears, Attorney General Eric Holder, former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Both the FBI and the Secret Service said Tuesday they were investigating the site.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said he had "no assessments to offer" on the situation and referred questions to the Secret Service, which wouldn't provide further details.

The site grew from 11 names to 20 in the first 24 hours since it became public, with its operator adding additional features to count the number of visitors and a link to a Twitter account. It offers no explanation about why the targets were selected or how the information was obtained. The Twitter account includes an anti-police message in Russian.

Social Security numbers posted on Jay-Z, Mel Gibson and others matched records in public databases. Social Security numbers are not public records, although they used to be included in some court filings. Many courts require the information be redacted from filings since the numbers can be used to steal a person's identity and open credit accounts in their name.

President Barack Obama told ABC News that he was aware of the investigation into the possible breach of his wife's data.

"We should not be surprised that if we've got hackers that want to dig in and have a lot of resources, that they can access this information," Obama said. "Again, not sure how accurate but ... you've got Web sites out there that tell people's credit card info. That's how sophisticated they are."

Online security expert Marc Maiffret said sensitive information can often be gleaned from a single database, but the varied nature of the people targeted made the site's motives less clear.

Maiffret, the chief technology officer for Carlsbad, Calif.-based security firm BeyondTrust, said the site contained information that if accurate could be very damaging to its targets.

"Pretty much everything comes falling down once you have a Social Security number," he said. "Once somebody has that, the person has the keys to everything."

The information could be used to shut down accounts and utilities, although Maiffret said celebrities and government officials have more resources to protect themselves and their financial companies will likely be guarding their accounts in the wake of the site's postings.

Average consumers should consider adding a second password to their accounts to protect against hackers who have access to their Social Security numbers and other financial info.

Los Angeles police also are investigating, trying to determine how information was obtained, including the address and credit report of Police Chief Charlie Beck.

Beck told reporters Tuesday that detectives would work to bring anyone responsible for posting the info online to justice.

"We will vigorously pursue the individuals that have made me a victim and have made a number of other people that are in the public eye victims," he said.

He acknowledged that many hackers operate outside the United States, but said there is often a connection stateside that can lead to prosecutions.

Frank Preciado, assistant officer in charge at the LAPD online section, said the postings are illegal. He said the information on the police chief was likely taken from what is supposed to be a secure database of city employees.

The site's page on Beck includes a reference to former officer Christopher Dorner, who apparently committed suicide after he killed four people during a multi-day rampage. Beck's page included the message "YouCantCornerTheDorner" and an image of a woman protesting police corruption.
