Star Wars Miniland at Legoland Florida

On?our trip to Legoland last week? (a Christmas?gift for our sons), my family and I were greeted with a wonderful surprise: All six episodes of Star Wars as told in Lego bricks.

I still can?t believe I didn?t know about it beforehand! It was in the press?when it opened on November 9th, but I guess I wasn?t paying attention. Earlier in 2012, a Star Wars Miniland had opened at Legoland Windsor, and the one at Legoland California has been open since March 2011 and an expansion has recently been added.

GeekMom has written plenty?already about Legoland Florida, so?while my husband and I were planning our trip, I wasn?t considering post fodder. But there it was ??some fresh new geekery to shout about to the masses. GeekMom Dakster?s husband trooped at the grand opening, but I think I might have been the first GeekMom to actually see it (and be it known it?s rare for me to be the first GeekMom to get to do anything this cool!).

And we almost missed it altogether! It?s tucked in a wooded area towards the back of the Miniland U.S.A. section of the park. You Moms know how it goes ? the kids see something off in the distance and you?re getting pulled in a different direction than you were intending. In our case, while we were at Miniland USA, the kids were begging to ride on the Dragon rollercoaster in the Lego Kingdom section.

Enjoy some pictures from our visit!

Former Expo Urbina out of prison and back on the baseball field in Venezuela

Former major league All-Star closer Ugueth Urbina is back in baseball after spending more than seven years in prison for attempted murder.

Urbina, who was released from prison last Sunday, took the field at University Stadium in Caracus in his native Venezuela on Friday.

He told reporters that he was looking forward to playing baseball again. He threw a bullpen session with the Caracus Lions of the Venezuelan Winter League.

?I?m excited to be here,? he said.

Urbina, 38, served about half of his 14-year sentence over a gun dispute in October 2005. He was arrested and jailed a month later. He was accused of attacking multiple men on his property, allegedly trying to set them on fire and going after at least one with a machete.

The incident ended an 11-year career in which Urbina, 38, twice made the All-Star team. He led the National League with 41 saves for the Montreal Expos in 1999.

In 583 career appearances, including 21 starts, Urbina went 44-49 with 237 saves and a 3.45 ERA.

Urbina said he hopes to make it back to the majors, but ?the first order of business is pitching in Venezuela.?

NewsDaily: Exclusive: Profits up, but Britain gets less tax from big firms

Exclusive: Profits up, but Britain gets less tax from big firms

By Tom BerginPosted 2012/12/27 at 4:09 am EST

LONDON, Dec. 27, 2012 (Reuters) ? Big companies in Britain now pay less tax than they did 12 years ago despite a big jump in profitability, a Reuters analysis of official data shows. Tax campaigners say the trend is the clearest signal yet that tax avoidance has blossomed under a more business-friendly strategy at the UK tax authority Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

A sign is seen outside a Starbucks Coffee shop in central London December 3, 2012. REUTERS/Andrew Winning

Large companies' payments of corporation tax - the UK equivalent of corporate income tax - totaled 21 billion pounds ($34 billion) in 2011/12, HMRC data shows. That was down five billion pounds or 21 percent since 2000/01 when the government, then controlled by the Labour Party, took the first steps towards a more collaborative approach to big business.

At the same time, the gross operating surplus for all companies in the UK - a widely watched measure of companies' profitability compiled by the Office of National Statistics - has risen 65 percent, to 329 billion pounds. The economy has grown by 55 percent over the same period, and receipts of both personal income tax and small companies' income tax are higher.

HMRC and the finance ministry denied the figures showed an increase in tax avoidance - legal tactics used by multinationals such as Google, Amazon and Starbucks. They cited recent economic weakness and lower corporation tax rates. The UK's official corporation tax rate was steady at 30 percent between 2000 and 2007 but has been gradually cut. In the last tax year it was 26 percent.

Reuters calculations show the lower tax rate and the weak economy account for about half the fall, leaving around 2.6 billion pounds of the difference in the amount of corporate tax paid between 2000/01 and 2011/12 unaccounted for.

John Christensen of Tax Justice Network, a tax campaigningoogleg group, said the figures show successive governments' attempts to create a more business-friendly administration - which includes a policy known as "enhanced relationship" based on mutual trust - have encouraged companies to use such tactics.

"These figures tell a more powerful story than any figures I have seen so far," he said, adding that senior HMRC staff had told him in recent years that they were "alarmed" at the drop in payments from large companies. HMRC defines these as firms with annual profit of more than 1.5 million pounds.

The finance ministry declined to comment on the calculations.

"PARADOXICAL"

Prem Sikka, a professor of accounting at Essex University who has written extensively about tax avoidance, said that even allowing for the tax cut, the figures were "paradoxical".

"How are they managing to reconcile higher profits with lower taxes?" he said. "It can't be done ... unless they are booking these profits somewhere else." Companies reporting for tax purposes are increasingly diverting UK profits to lower-tax jurisdictions, he said.

Google, for example, channels $4 billion of UK sales through Ireland each year, most of which ends up in Bermuda. Google said it complies with tax law in every country in which it operates but that it also has an obligation to its shareholders "to run our business efficiently".

When shown the calculations, an HMRC spokesman said the downward trend may also have been emphasized by a shift in the way taxes were paid from 1999 which led to "elements of double counting" in 2000/01 and 2001/02. That could make revenues in those years look artificially high. He declined to quantify the impact of this.

Sikka dismissed the impact of this change.

"That wouldn't make any difference to the total tax liability," he said.

HMRC's own data does not point to a spike in corporation tax payments over the period the changes were initiated.

Total corporation tax payments were just 2 billion pounds higher in 2001-2002 than in 1998-1999, a rise of 7 percent, while GDP rose 16 percent over the period.

The government's tax minister, David Gauke, who has described corporation tax as one of "the most economically damaging taxes", called the tax authority's current approach "very successful" in a September speech. He declined requests for an interview.

Stocks drop as consumers get nervous, cliff nears

NEW YORK (AP) ? The market sent a gloomy message Thursday: The economy is still far from repaired, the "fiscal cliff" negotiations far from sealed.

Stocks were down for the fourth day in a row, falling decisively after a report that consumer confidence has plunged to its lowest level since August.

"An unpleasant surprise," was how Hugh Johnson, chairman and chief investment officer of Hugh Johnson Advisors in Albany, N.Y., described the numbers. "People are worried."

It was an uneasy sentiment already made obvious this week: The holiday shopping season so far has been the weakest since the financial crisis of 2008.

Washington's stagnating budget negotiations compounded the market's pessimism. Automatic tax increases and government spending cuts kick in next week if Republicans and Democrats can't reach a budget agreement by Monday night.

On Thursday, both sides demanded that the other take the initiative in compromising. President Barack Obama called the Democratic and Republican leaders of the House and Senate to talk about the negotiations.

Until recently, investors were treating the "fiscal cliff" with a measure of nonchalance. Stocks rose more or less steadily from mid-November until late last week.

But now, with the "fiscal cliff" deadline nearing and no deal in sight, more investors are getting unnerved by the uncertainty.

"This is a matter of a few personalities; it isn't something where you can analyze spreadsheets to figure out what's going on," said David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Funds. "There are very few investors on one side or the other who have wanted to make a strong bet on this one."

Thursday was the market's fourth straight down day. The fact that the stock market usually rises during the last few days of the year only makes the pattern more disquieting.

To be sure, plenty of traders think the "fiscal cliff" is overhyped. Even if the government misses the Monday deadline, the higher taxes and lower government spending would have a gradual effect, and Congress could always repeal them.

That doesn't mean they're not worried about the economy in general.

"I'm not particularly concerned about the fiscal cliff," said Derrick Irwin, portfolio manager for Wells Fargo Advantage Funds. "The economy is going to do what the economy is going to do ? it just doesn't look too good."

The major U.S. stock indexes wavered between small gains and losses in early trading. They stayed in the red after the consumer confidence numbers were released, and after Harry Reid, a Democrat and the Senate Majority Leader, said it appeared the government would miss the Dec. 31 deadline.

All three major indexes were down by more than 1 percent in the afternoon. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 138 points to 12,977. The Standard & Poor's 500 was down 15 points to 1,405, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 32 points to 2,959.

Trading volume was light, with many investors still on Christmas vacation. That also made the market more volatile. When fewer shares are changing hands, the market can move on relatively small trades.

There were scattered signs that the U.S. economy might be improving, but investors were underwhelmed. The government reported that unemployment claims fell and sales of new homes rose.

"We've got lots of numbers out, and nobody's even talking about or thinking about the numbers," Johnson said. People can't take too much comfort in those reports, he said, when they "are worried about their jobs and worried about their incomes."

Among stocks making big moves:

?Chipmaker Marvell Technology Group dropped more than 4 percent, falling 34 cents to $7.06, after the company lost a patent case brought by Carnegie Mellon University. Marvell said it would fight the $1.2 billion ruling.

?JCPenney was down more than 7 percent, losing $1.48 to $19.27, after rising more than 4 percent the day before. The stock has been volatile as the company tries to remake its image to attract younger shoppers.

?Steinway Musical Instruments fell more than 5 percent, down $1.28 to $21.24, after announcing that it doesn't plan to seek buyers.

Should You Take a Break from Exercise? | Women's Health News ...

Former gym rat Gwen Stefani has thrown in the towel on exercise. ?This past year, I kind of stopped working out. I think my body just needed a break. And so I did that and focused more on feeling good as opposed to beating myself up,? she recently told Marie Claire UK in an interview.

While recording and promoting No Doubt?s sixth studio album, Push And Shove, the singer, clothing designer, wife, and mother of two decided that working out, something she once felt she ?had to do,? had to go. Last year, Stefani claimed she was addicted to exercising, according to the magazine.

However, that all-or-nothing approach to exercise is what Stefani and other exercisers really need to rid themselves of, says Barbara Bushman, Ph.D., a professor of kinesiology at Missouri State University.

?Rest can be just as important to fitness as working out,? she says. Why? Your body doesn?t get stronger during exercise. It gets stronger while it?s rebuilding itself from that exercise. Overtraining deprives your muscles of the time they need to heal, diminishing results and risking injury. What?s more, people who work out too hard for too long may be less healthy than people who don?t work out at all, according to a review recently published in the British journal Heart. During excessive exercise, the body releases more free radicals than the body?s antioxidants can handle, risking harm to internal organs and tissues.

?However, rest doesn?t mean lying in a hammock. Rest should be part of your workout, not an alternative to your workout,? Bushman says. Unless you have a medical condition that prohibits you from exercising, physical activity should always be part of a healthy lifestyle. Putting exercise on hold for more than two weeks can lead to loss of muscle mass and a decline in fitness.

Have you been beating yourself up with exercise? Here, five ways to make rest part of your workout, improve your fitness gains, and love the gym again:

Be diligent with off days
Include at least one or two no-exercise days into your fitness schedule each week, and let at least 48 hours pass before re-working any given muscle group to give your body time to repair itself, Bushman advises. For example, if you work your triceps hard on Monday, wait until Wednesday to perform a triceps-specific exercise. Also, by realizing that effective workouts can be short and sweet, you are less likely to feel that they are keeping you from your other priorities. Bonus: In a recent study from the University of Copenhagen, people who exercised for 30 minutes a day lost more weight than those who exercised for an hour a day.

Alternate hard and easy
Crafting a schedule that switches between ?hard? and ?easy? days can add variety, interest, and needed rest into your workout. Runners who train using the model suffer fewer injuries, enjoy their workouts more, and can run almost twice as far as those who exercise at a similar level of intensity during each workout, according to former University of Oregon track and field coach Bill Bowerman, who popularized the training principle.

Try something new
Have you stopped looking forward to your workouts? ?Try out a new exercise such as hiking or cycling, or take up a team sport or gym class with your friends,? Bushman says. It will allow you to mix up your workout plan, give overworked muscles a rest, and train those you might typically miss.

Nourish your muscles
Between workouts, focus on helping your muscles repair themselves through gentle stretching, eight hours of sleep a night, and plenty of healthy muscle-building foods, she says. Research has shown that good-for-you nutrients including protein, whole grain-carbohydrates, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, zinc, and vitamins A, C, and D promote cell growth and muscle recovery. (Check out the best workout foods.)

Tweak your priorities
By valuing working out as a way to improve mood, fight stress, and increase energy, you?ll enjoy exercise more and consider it as something you want to do, not something you are obligated to do, Bushman says. The result: You?ll make fitness a priority over the long term and reap bigger fitness gains. According to research from the American College of Sports Medicine, people who exercise to feel good stick with workouts longer than those who do it to look good.

Number of e-book readers increasing in United States: survey

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The popularity of electronic books is increasing in the United States, with nearly one-quarter of American bibliophiles reading e-books, according to a survey released on Thursday.

The number of e-readers aged 16 years and older jumped from 16 percent in 2011 to 23 percent this year, while print readers fell from 72 to 67 percent in 2012, in a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center.

"The move toward e-book reading coincides with an increase in ownership of electronic book reading devices," the organization said. Its report analyzed reading trends among the 75 percent of Americans who read at least one book in the last year.

"In all, the number of owners of either a tablet computer or e-book reading device ... grew from 18 percent in late 2011 to 33 percent in 2012."

E-book owners increased from 4 percent in May 2010 to 19 percent in November 2012, while people with tablets jumped from 3 percent to 25 percent during the same period, according to the report.

People most likely to read e-books are well-educated, 30- to 49-year-olds who live in households earning $75,000 or more.

More women, 81 percent, read books, compared to 70 percent of men, and the number of readers declines as people age. The trend toward e-books impacted libraries, which stocked and loaned more e-books.

"The share of recent library users who have borrowed an e-book from a library has increased from 3 percent last year to 5 percent this year," according to Pew.

Even awareness that library stock e-books has grown, from 24 percent late last year to 31 percent now.

The findings were based on a telephone survey of 2,252 people, aged 16 years and older, across the United States and a similar poll the year before. It had a 2.7 percent margin of error.

Just A Minute With: Hugh Jackman on "Les Miserables"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Australian actor Hugh Jackman says his background in musical theater and action films made him feel "like all the stars were aligning" when he took on the starring role of Jean Valjean in the new movie version of "Les Miserables."

Jackman, 44, perhaps best known for his portrayal of Wolverine in the "X-Men" movie franchise, spoke to Reuters about the demands of the role in British director Tom Hooper's adaptation of the musical sensation that opened when Jackman was still a teenager.

Q. This role seemed tailor-made for you.

A. "It certainly for me felt like the biggest challenge I have had. I have never been on the front foot so much for a part. I was quite aggressive going for it.

"It felt like the right time. Once I got the part I will admit to you there were times when I went, 'Oh maybe I have bit off more than I can chew here,' because it is a pretty daunting role in every way - physically, vocally, emotionally."

Q. Has all your Broadway experience - and movies - led you to this role?

A. "I never expected this trajectory of having movies, action movies, which was such a weird thing for me, and musicals, which was also a weird thing for me. I was a theater graduate ... . So I have for a long time wanted to put the two together. And I waited for the right thing - and when this one came up I was like, 'Oh my God, I didn't have to think twice about it.' So, I suppose it does feel like all the stars were aligning, and thank God it took them 27 years to make it."

Q. Most actors downplay the Oscars, and this movie is getting some buzz. What do you think?

A. "Of course it is every actor's dream. In our business it is the highest currency there is. It is a dream.

"For me, I didn't grow up thinking I was going to be an actor, let alone hoping one day to win an Oscar - that was never part of my reality. I went to acting school when I was 22. I don't even remember thinking about being a professional actor until I was 30 and in drama school."

Q. What did you have to do to convince Tom Hooper to give you the part?

A. "What I needed to convince him (of) was that it is possible for the lyrics of the song to feel natural. I know he was skeptical of that whole feeling and was nervous, rightly, about whether a musical could really move people and make non-musical lovers feel things, and feel at home with the sung form, because it is highly unnatural right? ... . I knew I needed to convince him that the emotion and the story, the thoughts of the character, could feel natural."

Q. You had that much pressure while in rehearsals?

A. "Your voice had to be as good on the first as the ninth (take). Because, say he (Hooper) got the camera move, or the acting was right on the ninth. You can't pull the vocal from another, or cut to the second one, because the rhythm would be different. So I think he was testing stamina as well. And pitch I am sure, to see if people could sing in tune."

Q. Do you feel the responsibility to the 'Les Mis' fans?

A: "Completely. I am part of that musical theater world and I know there are some roles that are held up there. And there are people who play those roles who are right up there. It turned out I was acting opposite one of them, Colm Wilkinson, who originally created the role and was astonishing. It actually was really great having him there because there is probably, in terms of the ghosts of Valjean, no one more powerful ... than him."

Q. You are known as being one of the most sincere Hollywood stars. Who is your role model for this humble quality?

A. "My father has a lot of very humble qualities. He is more humble than I am. He is very quiet. If I think about it, there are many Jean Valjean qualities about my father. He has never said a bad word about anyone, he is a religious man in the more traditional sense, and yet he will never really talk about it. He is a man of action."

Syrian rebels fully capture town near Turkey

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels fully captured a northern town near the Turkish border on Tuesday after weeks of siege and heavy fighting, activists said.

The takeover of Harem, a town of 20,000 in northern Idlib province, was the latest in a string of recent rebel successes that include the capture of wide areas along the border with Turkey. Most of those areas have been in northern Aleppo province, where anti-government forces have captured at least three large military bases.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels captured Harem in the early hours of Tuesday. Mohammed Kanaan, an Idlib-based activist, said the last post to be taken was the historic citadel, which overlooked the town. The army had turned the citadel into a military post.

"Harem is fully liberated now," Kanaan he said via Skype. He added that as the rebels pounded army posts and checkpoints in Harem, the troops withdrew to the citadel that later fell in the hands of rebels.

Rami-Abdul-Rahman, who heads to Observatory, said nearly 30 soldiers and pro-government gunmen surrendered late Monday. He added that rebels set free all gunmen at the age of 16 or less and referred others to local tribunals.

"Harem was very important because it is one of the towns that was loyal to the regime," Abdul-Rahman said by telephone about the town that is nearly a mile from the Turkish border.

In his traditional Christmas address, Pope Benedict XVI decried the slaughter of the "defenseless" in Syria, where anti-regime activists estimate more than 40,000 have died in fighting since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's rule began in March 2011.

The pope encouraged Arab spring nations, where long-serving dictators were forced to step down.

In Aleppo province, which neighbors Idlib, local activist Mohammed Saeed said rebels attacked a military base in the town of Mannagh near the border with Turkey. He said it is one of four air bases in the province.

Regime forces have been using helicopters to carry supplies to besieged areas and to attack rebel positions.

The regime has had increasing difficulty sending supplies by land to Aleppo province after rebels captured in October the strategic town Maaret al-Numan. The town is on the highway that links Damascus with Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial center and a major battleground in the civil war since July.

"Airplanes and helicopters are the only way to send supplies since the Free Syrian Army controls the land," Saeed said. He added that rebels are also laying a siege to Aleppo's international airport known as Nairab and threatening to shoot down military or civilians planes using it.

In the Damascus suburb of Jaramana, opposition gunmen ambushed the head of military intelligence in the area and seriously wounded him. He later died of his wounds, the Observatory said.

In Israel, top officials said they cannot corroborate Syrian activists' claims that the regime has used chemical weapons against its citizens.

Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio that Israel has "no confirmation or proof" the regime has employed such weapons in the civil war. He says Israel is "monitoring the situation with concern."

Defense Ministry official Amos Gilad told Israel Radio that Syria was closely guarding its chemical weapons stockpiles.

On Monday, the Observatory quoted activists in the central city of Homs as saying that six rebels died in two neighborhoods the day before after inhaling white smoke that came out of shells fired by government troops in the area. Amateur videos released by activists showed men in hospital beds suffering breathing problems as doctors placed oxygen masks over their faces.

Volunteers at Colo. base track Santa's progress

(AP) ? Volunteers at a Colorado Air Force base monitoring maps showing Santa Claus' progress are several hours into their goodwill mission and have answered more than 24,000 phone calls from children wanting to know everything from old Saint Nick's age, to how reindeer fly, to when they can expect their presents.

Phones have been ringing nonstop Monday at Peterson Air Force Base, headquarters of the North American Aerospace Command's annual Santa-tracking operation.

Dozens of helpers at NORAD are taking calls and tracking Santa's location on large projection screens. They're posting updates for nearly 1.2 million Facebook fans and 104,000 Twitter followers.

The maps show Santa is in Pakistan and heading west. He has delivered more than 2 billion presents so far, according to the "NORAD Tracks Santa" website.

Volunteers started taking calls at 4 a.m. Mountain time on Monday and will keep updating until 3 a.m. on Christmas morning.

NORAD Tracks Santa began in 1955 when a newspaper ad listed the wrong phone number for kids to call Santa. Callers ended up getting the Continental Air Defense Command, NORAD's predecessor, and a tradition was born.

Following is a sampling of calls received at the base:

___

GIFTS IN HEAVEN: One little boy from Missouri phoned in to ask what time Santa delivered toys to heaven, said volunteer Jennifer Eckels, who took the call. The boy's mother got on the line to explain that his sister had died this year.

"I think Santa headed there first," Eckels told him.

___

IS HE THERE YET?: James Solano took a call from a young girl and her father in Bangkok, asking when Santa would arrive. Solano checked the map and said it wouldn't be long.

"The dad was saying, 'We've got to get to bed soon,'" said Solano, an Army colonel.

"It was kind of neat," he said. "They were very thrilled."

___

SANTA KNOWS: Glenn Barr took a call from a 10-year-old who wasn't sure if he would be sleeping at his mom's house or his dad's and was worried about whether Santa would find him.

"I told him Santa would know where he was and not to worry," Barr said.

Another child asked if he was on the nice list or the naughty list.

"That's a closely guarded secret, and only Santa knows," Barr replied.

___

THE REAL DEAL: A young boy called to ask if Santa was real.

Air Force Maj. Jamie Humphries, who took the call, said, "I'm 37 years old, and I believe in Santa, and if you believe in him as well, then he must be real."

The boy turned from the phone and yelled to others in the room, "I told you guys he was real!"

Self-insured? - Business Management Daily

The IRS has announced final regulations governing new fees?payable by health insurers and employer sponsors of self-insured health plans?that will help fund a new Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. Created by the Afford??able Care Act health care reform law, the institute was established to advance medical best practices based on how healthy patients remain after they have received care.

It is funded in part by the new fees charged to insurance plans?currently $1 per insured (including spouses, dependents, retirees and COBRA participants). The first payment is due July 31.

If you are a traditional group health plan, the fees are cooked into premiums, and your carrier will handle payment.

However, if your plan is self-insured, you?re on the hook. Consult with your organization?s plan administrator and tax advisor to determine how you should proceed.

The fees are pursuant to 26 CFR Parts 40, 46, and 602. For more information on obligations of self-insured plans, contact the IRS at (202) 622?6080.

(AP) ? As residents prepared to observe Christmas less than two weeks after a gunman killed 20 children and six educators at an elementary school, people sharing in the town's mourning brought offerings of cards, handmade snowflakes and sympathy.

Tiny empty Christmas stockings with the victims' names on them hung from trees in the neighborhood where the children were shot. On Christmas Eve, residents said they would light luminaries outside their homes in memory of the victims.

"We know that they'll feel loved. They'll feel that somebody actually cares," said Treyvon Smalls, a 15-year-old from a few towns away who arrived at town hall with hundreds of cards and paper snowflakes collected from around the state.

At the Trinity Episcopal Church, less than 2 miles from the school, an overflow crowd of several hundred people attended Christmas Eve services. They were greeted by the sounds of a children's choir echoing throughout a sanctuary hall that had its walls decorated with green wreaths adorned with red bows.

The church program said flowers were donated in honor of Sandy Hook shooting victims, identified by name or as the "school angels" and "Sandy Hook families."

The service, which generally took on a celebratory tone, made only a few vague references to the shooting. Pastor Kathie Adams-Shepherd led the congregation in praying "that the joy and consolation of the wonderful counselor might enliven all who are touched by illness, danger, or grief, especially all those families affected by the shootings in Sandy Hook."

Police say the gunman, Adam Lanza, killed his mother in her bed before his Dec. 14 rampage and committed suicide as he heard officers arriving. Authorities have yet to give a theory about his motive.

While the grief is still fresh, some residents are urging political activism in the wake of the tragedy. A grassroots group called Newtown United has been meeting at the library to talk about issues ranging from gun control, to increasing mental health services to the types of memorials that could be erected for the victims. Some clergy members have said they also intend to push for change.

"We seek not to be the town of tragedy," said Rabbi Shaul Praver of Congregation Adath Israel. "But, we seek to be the town where all the great changes started."

Since the shooting, messages similar to the ones delivered Monday have arrived from around the world. People have donated toys, books, money and more. A United Way fund, one of many, has collected $3 million. People have given nearly $500,000 to a memorial scholarship fund at the University of Connecticut. On Christmas Day, police from other towns showed up for duty so Newtown officers could have the time off.

"It's a nice thing that they can use us this way," Ted Latiak, a police detective from Greenwich, Conn., said Christmas morning, as he and a fellow detective, each working a half-day shift, came out of a store with bagels and coffee for other officers.

At Washington's National Cathedral, the 20 children who were killed also were remembered. Angels made of paper doilies were used to adorn the altar in the children's chapel. They'll be displayed there through Jan. 6.

In the center of Newtown's Sandy Hook section Monday, a steady stream of residents and out-of-towners snapped pictures, lit candles and dropped off children's gifts at an expansive memorial filled with stuffed animals, poems, flowers, posters and cards.

"All the families who lost those little kids, Christmas will never be the same," said Philippe Poncet, a Newtown resident originally from France. "Everybody across the world is trying to share the tragedy with our community here."

Richard Scinto, a deacon at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, which was attended by eight children killed in the massacre, said the church's pastor, Rev. Robert Weiss, used several eulogies this week to tell his congregation to get angry and take action against what some consider is a culture of gun violence in the country.

Praver and Scinto said they are not opposed to hunting or to having police in schools, but both said something must be done to change what has become a culture of violence in the United States.

"These were his mother's guns," Scinto said. "Why would anyone want an assault rifle as part of a private citizen collection?"

A mediator who worked with Lanza's parents during their divorce has said Lanza, 20, was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, an autism-like disorder that is not associated with violence. It is not known whether he had other mental health issues. The guns used in the shooting had been purchased legally by his mother, Nancy Lanza, a gun enthusiast.

Gun control and mental health have also been topics at Newtown United meetings, along with what types of memorials would be most appropriate and any other action residents can take to feel like they are doing something.

"We don't want Newtown to go on the list with Columbine, Tucson and Virginia Tech and only have it associated with horrible acts," said Lee Shull, who moderated a Newton United meeting just days after the shootings. "We want to turn this into something positive. What can we do?"

A handful of people showed up to the group's first meeting at the town library two days after the Dec. 14 shooting. The next night, 35 attended, most scrawling ideas and notes on white paper covering the tables. A few days later there was barely room to maneuver around the meeting room when two guests showed up: Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Sen.-elect Chris Murphy, Connecticut Democrats who told the group they planned to push for gun control legislation and needed their constituents to help them press the issue in Washington.

The group sees itself as a way to spark a local and national dialogue and action in the aftermath of a tragedy. It's also a way to do something, anything, to cope with the sadness that has settled over Newtown.

Said resident John Neuhall: "Our hearts are broken wide open and we're here out of grief and out of love for those families."

jahedaaos: Finding A Home Remedy For Eczema | health and ...

Approximately eight percent of the population suffer from eczema. The skin condition is caused by a misfiring of one's immune system. The technical term for the disorder is is atopic dermatitis. It is characterized by a relentless inflammation of the skin's top layer, which ultimately leads to crusting, scaling, flaking and other unsightly side effects. The continuous itching and burning associated with its presence, along with its unattractive appearance, leads many people to begin searching for a home remedy for eczema.

Additional scars frequently form because of the continuous scratching many sufferers find hard to control. Numerous individuals search for homeopathic cures or natural remedies to find relief from such symptoms when traditional treatments have not been helpful. In most cases it is not difficult to discover an effective natural cure for eczema. However, a person may find that it is necessary to try different remedies before the most suitable one is found.

Red clover is an option that should be considered by those in search of an herbal supplement for the aforementioned condition. Red clover is popular among patients suffering from particularly severe cases of eczema. This is because it can be placed on blistering skin directly. Many people discover that it only takes one application to notice the difference. The herb is also available in capsule form; however, topical use provides quicker relief of symptoms.

Black current oil and evening primrose oil are two substances containing high levels of essential fatty acids. Such acids play an essential role in one's general health, and are particularly advantageous to those afflicted with skin disorders. Both oil's can be found in capsule form, and the correct dosage will depend on the individual's weight. In most cases, however, up to 8000 milligrams on a daily basis is typically regarded as a safe dose for adults.

Green tea is another effective natural cure for this disorder. In addition to the numerous health benefits for which it is renowned, green tea is full of anti-inflammatory properties, making it an ideal option for those suffering from eczema. One should drink a minimum of three cups each day, and it makes no difference whether the tea is consumed cold or hot.

Gamma Linolenic Acid, more often called simply GLA, has received much attention lately from health care professionals. It is an omega-6 essential fatty acid, and can alleviate the symptoms of this troublesome skin disorder. Its effectiveness is due in part to one of its ingredients called dihomo-gammalinolenic, which bolsters the human immune system, and therefore reduces the length and severity of one's flareups.

It is also essential to keep in mind that simple activities such as maintaining clean skin and avoiding too much exposure to the sun are also vital to general skin health. Consuming a multivitamin that contains many different antioxidants can also lessen the intensity and frequency of a person's outbreaks.

More in-depth studies have recently been launched regarding natural remedies for this disorder. It might be necessary for sufferers to use various treatments prior to finding a beneficial home remedy for eczema. As with all supplements, one should discuss their use with a physician prior to adding such products to their diet.

Arne Duncan Tears Up Over Gun Violence: 'It's Time We Do Something About It'

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is calling for action against gun violence, fighting back tears during his first public interview since the school shooting that shook Newtown, Conn. last week.

Duncan sat down with PBS's Gwen Ifill in a special report that aired Friday. He says the responsibility for action lies on "all of us," though he is concerned about the country's ability to collectively break through years of barriers that have blocked strict gun laws.

Duncan grew up in Chicago, where his mother worked as an after-school tutor for low-income students. He studied at Harvard University, where he co-captained the basketball team before going pro in Australia. Duncan returned to Chicago just a few years later, eventually becoming CEO of Chicago Public Schools.

Being raised in Chicago, Duncan said Friday, visibly shaken and choking up, that gun violence "has haunted [him his] entire life," adding that he had mentors and good friends who died from gunshots.

"So this is not a new problem. This is something that I've battled with and tried to understand from the time I was a little boy, and I think it's time we do something about it," Duncan said. "I kept on my wall in Chicago a beautiful picture a young man wrote for me of him as a fireman. There's a caption on it. He wrote, 'If i grow up, I want to be a fireman.' 'If' I grow up, not 'when' I grow up. That's a really deep concept, Gwen, and we have far too many young people in our country today asking themselves 'if' I grow up, not 'when' I grow up.' Everything we try to do in education is to get children to think longterm? but if children are asking the question 'if I grow up,' that changes everything they do."

The Education Secretary now sits on a new gun violence task force headed by Vice President Joe Biden that was created last week by President Barack Obama to create proposals for tighter gun laws within the next month. In a speech Friday at a Washington elementary school, Duncan called for reasonable weapons restrictions and "limiting easy access to guns." In a video message to educators Tuesday, he also vowed to "do everything in our power" to keep schools as safe havens that serve to educate.

Duncan continued in the PBS interview to describe how hows own view on guns evolved from the crimes he saw against school children during his tenure as head of Chicago Public Schools. And though he warned that policy and government "will never be the entire solution," he saw lawmakers as those who can play a role in beginning to devise solutions.

"I do think the world has shifted -- everyone in this country feels vulnerable and wants something better for their own children," Duncan said. "I want our children to grow up in a community free of fear. We don't live in a third world country. There isn't World War I or World War II going on, and the fact that so many of our children are living in so much fear today is just absolutely unacceptable to me."

Watch the full PBS interview with Duncan in the video above.
