Foods Featuring Low Calories! | Fish Information

Negative calorie foods: Are there really any negative calorie foods? To tell the truth, NO there isn?t! Calorie?s are little molecules of heat and as such they cannot be negative. When we say negative calorie foods what we actually mean is items of food we can intake and digest that are able to use more calories than they contain.

Let?s talk water. In actual fact lets chat about Ice Cold Water!

Water has no calories at all and is absolutely a negative calorie food (That is if you call water a type of food?) given that once we drink the ice cold water our body is working to heat up the cold water up to blood temperature, because of this our body is expanding energy and burning up calories.

You know there are a ton of food stuffs available for purchase but not many of those are what we probably would call negative calorie foods. Pretty much all of the food products on the list at the bottom of this page are what we might call negative calorie foods, whilst this actually is incorrect for the reason that they do not in all honesty burn up a whole lot more unhealthy calories than they poses. Of course, when you look at the tiny extent of calories remaining after consuming something like a stick of celery for example, are easily burnt away by doing something as simple as scratching your forehead then you start to have an understanding of precisely why they hold value in a diet program. I hope you now fully grasp what we imply when we talk about negative calorie foods?

Anorexics just really love negative calorie foods, understanding that ought to set your alarm belles ringing. Despite the fact that negative calorie foods are incredibly good in small amounts they simply cannot satisfy all your nutritional necessities in a positive and healthy and balanced way. If you depend upon on just consuming these kinds of foods the obvious outcome will likely be starvation. This is because once all the unwanted calories and fats are removed it would have to turn it?s attentions to the muscle mass of your physique. This behavior would very rapidly turn into debility and wasting of your body as seen in the anorexia illness.

Fasting or detoxing the body is a better method to utilize these food stuffs. By utilising them in this manner it is a good deal more heart-healthy for yourself. By way of example. For those who have ingested a tad bit more than you expected to over the Christmas holidays you can actually choose to detox your body for one to three days by only eating these kinds of negative calorie food products.

So long as you are fairly healthy and fit enough to carry this out it is a terrific strategy to throw out the not so good factors from your system. However I fervently advise you that you get medical assistance preceding to endeavoring on this scheme.

Here are a several suggestions to take into consideration if you ever make the decision to execute a negative calorie detox. Under no circumstances eat considerable sums of any one form of food. Fruit?s by way of example include acids that can probably destroy the abdominal lining if eaten to excess. Some others include the likelihood to over facilitate the liver. Typically put together the foods the best way you possibly can and use them in small but effective proportions for the most desirable success.

Eliminate eating quite frequently. This approach will just make you feel sick and bloated. Bear in mind that this is only a short-term detox and you ought to be capable to get through it with no need of honestly feeling as if you?re that hungry.

If you intend to have 5 or 6 salad meals a day this should help you feel substantially less hungry that will help you through the mental element of things. Try to eat the foods in their inherent state (raw), foods for instance , beets and carrots will want to be grated, this will help make them a lot more desirable and satisfying.

Furthermore bear in mind that by detoxing you could possibly suffer some less than enjoyable symptoms. Things something like irritability, headaches, depression and tiredness. If symptoms are intense, stop the detox and see your doctor. The moment your detox has finished make a slow return to proper eating.

As promised above, here is the list of negative calorie groceries.

Ibrahimovic and Messi go head to head

By DANIELLA MATAR

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:54 a.m. ET March 27, 2012

MILAN (AP) -With most fans keeping an eye on Lionel Messi, it will be Zlatan Ibrahimovic that is out to prove something when AC Milan hosts defending champions Barcelona on Wednesday in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals.

Ibrahimovic spent an unhappy season at Barcelona before heading to Milan after falling out with coach Pep Guardiola and several of his teammates. But on Saturday, he scored his 29th goal of the season in Milan's 2-1 win over Roma.

"We have had so many champions, this one seems to me to be one of the best," Milan vice president Adriano Galliani said. "It will be a great match.

"Milan has been used to these kind of matches for so many years and I'm happy when Milan fights. Last year we were in battle with Inter, this year with Juventus: the opponent changes, but we are always there. At the end you lose, you win, you draw, but what's important is to keep the club at the top."

In the Champions League, Ibrahimovic has scored five goals in six games. Messi, however, scored that amount of goals in his last Champions League game, a 7-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen.

"He is the best in the world," Ibrahimovic said. "Messi grows better every year and he's beating record after record. I hope he goes on a long time like this, I enjoy watching him play football. Am I as strong as him? It's not up to me to say, I'm doing well here and what's most important is that Milan wins.

"I don't have anything to prove, what others say is only their opinion. Will I greet Guardiola? I don't know, the past is the past, I don't think this is important for either of us."

Barcelona, which has won the competition twice in the past three years, is favorite to go through, although it faces a stern test against Milan, which is the Italian league leader and seven-time European champion.

"The whole team has to have a perfect game, including me," Ibrahimovic added. "We are playing against the strongest team but we have nothing to lose. We have prepared well for this and I hope we can translate that onto the pitch. We are the only Italian side in Europe and we hope to remain so even after these two games.

"Without my teammates it's impossible to do what I do. We're a team, at the moment I'm scoring a lot of goals, but those are phases. Without the team it is impossible. You lose and you win together. We are a group, we are Milan."

Milan was hit by a late blow when defender Thiago Silva limped out of Saturday's win. The Brazilian will miss both legs of the quarterfinal.

The two clubs have already met in the Champions League this season, in the group stage, with Milan drawing 2-2 at the Camp Nou - thanks to a late equalizer from Thiago Silva - and losing 3-2 at home when both teams were already qualified for the knockout stages.

"We matched them," Galliani said. "All in all we drew 4-4, and then there was the dubious penalty for Barcelona.

"We're not very lucky in the draws, but neither is Barca."

Milan should welcome back Maxi Lopez and Robinho after the pair missed the weekend's match with injury. However, fellow strikers Antonio Cassano, Filippo Inzaghi and Alexandre Pato are still out.

Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes feels that will have little impact on the outcome.

"It's a good moment (to play them) but they are always a dangerous team," Valdes said. "We saw it in the group phase and they are in good form now. They have some injuries but historically they have always been there in Europe and they have enough important players to replace the injured.

"When you've already met in the group phase it can complicate things, like what happened the year we faced Inter Milan. Let's hope the story changes this time and that the matchup comes out in our favor. Despite their injury problems, Milan is a great team with players who are very motivated at this moment."

Barcelona has injury problems of its own. Adriano is sidelined and, although Ibrahim Afellay will travel to Milan, the Dutch midfielder is expected to be a game time-decision as he makes a return six months after having knee surgery.

94% The Secret World of Arrietty

All Critics (113) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (106) | Rotten (7)

As pretty as it is, this Secret World is too Earthbound by far.

The Secret World of Arrietty is a marvelously captivating animated feature about very tiny people and the full-scale world they inhabit.

Yonebayashi gives Arrietty an excellent sense of balance, with the adventure aspects of the story, which feel legitimately dangerous providing well-paced contrast the film's more placid moments.

It's an enjoyable and attractive-looking film, but a little of that "Speed Racer" energy wouldn't have been such a bad thing.

The visual details are inventive, and the animation - particularly the colors - is lovely.

"The Secret World of Arrietty'' is a feast for the eyes that will engage the entire family.

It certainly belongs in the second rank of Ghibli fantasies. But give it a chance.

Most will be caught up in its beautiful spell, immersed in great storytelling at its finest.

The soft-focus animation has an impressionistic quality, as if a gentle breeze had wafted across a Monet canvas.

This smart, winsome fairy tale is not quite Hiyao Miyazaki, but it still might be the best animated film that (some few) will see all year.

Another Studio Ghibli wonder, as heartbreaking for its devotion to craft, artistry and intelligent storytelling (for viewers of all ages) as for its themes of inevitable exile and impossible love.

There's a gentle movie from Japan that's going to seem familiar to a lot of fans of the series of books about 'The Borrowers.'

...yet another jewel in the crown of Studio Ghibli.

...creates a sense of wide-eyed wonder and discovery as we experience the awe-inspiring mysteries of an ordinary house as seen from the four-inch borrower's point of view.

The animation, a gorgeous blend of bewitching watercolored backgrounds and poignantly rendered characters, is, as ever, beyond reproach.

What is most effective is the way the sense of peaceful shelter and retreat in the country setting contrasts with the precariousness of the situations faced by Shawn and Arrietty.

It's hard to imagine this scenario playing out with more delicacy and care than animator-turned-director Yonebayashi Hiromasa brings to bear.

Arrietty has an elegiac mood, like a more wan and sedate Toy Story.

Gently enchanting, an extraordinary adventure

There may not be a frenzy of action and fast cuts but each scene has meticulous details about how the borrowers live, how they make use of the things in their environment to survive.

Tiny people who live in the walls of a rural home are put at risk when they are discovered by the humans residing there. Studio Ghibli offers a soothing animated version of the classic children's novels.

the basic elements of loneliness, friendship, and the fragility of life are intact, along with that ineffable sense of wonder, melancholy, and magic

By being less bizarre than SPIRITED AWAY and having more of a human center to the film, THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY is one of Studio Ghibli's best efforts to date.

A beautiful family film based on THE BORROWERS will delight audiences of all ages

The Secret World of Arrietty is an engaging and warm story of a lovely friendship that has enough action and humour to satisfy all ages, and boy, it's awfully pretty.

Security experts applaud opt-in requirement

(NEWSER) - Google has quietly launched a facial recognition service for Google+, but unlike Facebook's more intrusive photo ID feature , Google is earning praise from privacy experts for keeping Find My Face an opt-in feature, reports eWeek . Like Facebook's Tag Suggestions, which launched about a year ago, Find My Face examines photos on Google+ and tries to identify the people in them. "Google is not interested in making the same mistakes Facebook made," says an analyst. More?

Army sergeant charged in Afghan massacre

FILE - In this Aug. 23, 2011, file photo provided by the Defense Video & Imagery Distribution System, Sgt. Robert Bales takes part in exercises at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif. It is still not known if Bales, who allegedly massacred 17 Afghans, was ever diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, but even if he had been that alone would not have prevented him from being sent back to war. The Army diagnosed 76,176 soldiers with PTSD between 2000 and 2011. Many returned to the battlefield after mental health providers determined their treatment worked and their symptoms had gone into remission. The case of Bales has sparked debate about whether the practice needs to be re-examined. (AP) ? Charges filed Friday against Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales reflect the horror of the crime: 17 counts of premeditated murder, more than half of them children, during a shooting rampage in southern Afghanistan. But while Afghans are calling for swift and severe punishment, it will likely be months, even years, before the public ever sees Bales in a courtroom.

One only has to look at two recent and similarly high-profile cases to see that the wheels of military justice turn slowly.

It's been nearly 29 months since an Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Hasan, allegedly killed 13 and injured two dozen more at Fort Hood, Texas. His trial is scheduled to begin in June. And it's been 21 months since the military charged intelligence analyst Bradley Manning with leaking hundreds of thousands of pages of classified information. It took nine months before he was deemed competent to stand trial.

The Bales case is likely to be equally complex, involving questions of his mental state and the role that the stresses of war and possible previous head injuries may have played in his alleged actions. Most of the eyewitnesses are the Afghan villagers and survivors who may be brought in for the trial.

The military on Friday charged Bales with 17 counts of murder, six counts of attempted murder and six counts of assault in the March 11 pre-dawn massacre in two southern Afghanistan villages near his base. The father of two from Lake Tapps, Wash., was officially informed of the 29 charges just before noon at the U.S. military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he is confined.

The maximum punishment for a premeditated murder conviction is death, dishonorable discharge from the armed forces, reduction to the lowest enlisted grade and total forfeiture of pay and allowances, according to Col. Gary Kolb, a spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. The mandatory minimum sentence is life imprisonment with the chance of parole.

The charges offered few details of what happened that night. But the 38-year-old soldier is accused of walking off his base with his 9mm pistol and M-4 rifle, which was outfitted with a grenade launcher, killing four men, four women, two boys and seven girls and burning some of the bodies. The ages of the children were not disclosed.

In the most detailed descriptions of the shootings to date, the charges say Bales shot a young girl in the head, a young boy in the thigh, a man in the neck and a woman in the chest and groin. The documents also say that he "shot at" another girl and boy, but apparently did not hit them.

The attack occurred in the Panjwai district of Kandahar Province, the spiritual birthplace of the Taliban. The dead bodies were found in Balandi and Alkozai villages ? one north and one south of the base.

Members of the Afghan delegation investigating the killings said one Afghan guard working from midnight to 2 a.m. saw a U.S. soldier return to the base around 1:30 a.m. Another Afghan soldier who replaced the first and worked until 4 a.m. said he saw a U.S. soldier leaving the base at 2:30 a.m. It's unknown whether the Afghan guards saw the same U.S. soldier. If the gunman acted alone, information from the Afghan guards would suggest that he returned to base in between the shooting rampages.

It also is not known whether the suspect used grenades, Kolb said. The grenade launcher attachment is added to the standard issue M-4 rifle for some soldiers but not all, he said. Bales was assigned to provide force protection at the base.

The case against him is the worst allegation of killing of civilians by an American in Afghanistan and has severely strained U.S.-Afghan ties at a critical time in the decade-old war.

Not addressed in the charges are suggestions that Bales may have been drinking. On Friday, a senior U.S. defense official said Bales was drinking in the hours before the attack on Afghan villagers, violating a U.S. military order banning alcohol in war zones. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the charges before they were filed.

U.S. officials, however, have said that additional charges could be filed as time goes on. Bales' civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, said Friday the government will have a hard time proving its case and that his client's mental state will be an important issue. Bales was on his fourth tour of duty, having served three tours in Iraq, where he suffered head and foot injuries.

Meanwhile, an attorney for Bales' wife said the couple have spoken by telephone twice since he was detained. Attorney Lance Rosen said Bales called his wife, Karilyn, first from overseas shortly after the March 11 pre-dawn massacre, then from Fort Leavenworth on Wednesday.

Rosen said Bales and his wife were warned the call Wednesday would be monitored and told they would only have 10 minutes to talk. They talked about family matters and "reaffirmed their love for each other," Rosen said. He also said the family has set up a defense fund to help pay for Bales' legal fees.

The charges set in motion what will likely be a lengthy military justice process.

"Usually in military and civilian criminal cases, delay accrues to the benefit of the accused. So there will be some maneuvering to put it off a while," said Gary Solis, retired Marine prosecutor and adjunct law professor at Georgetown University. "I think it's many months before we're going to see this thing go to trial, if it ever goes to trial."

Bales may face what the military calls a "sanity board," to determine his mental state at the time, and whether he is competent to stand trial.

Since Bales was assigned to a unit based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state? the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Infantry Division ? the charges were sent Friday to a special court-martial convening authority, the 17th Fires Brigade, an artillery unit at the post. Lewis-McChord spokesman Lt. Col. Gary Dangerfield said officials at the post will have the legal responsibility of trying and managing the case against Bales, but it was not clear where the proceedings would actually take place.

Maj. Christopher Ophardt at Lewis-McChord said the preliminary hearing may not take place for a few months and it would likely be several more months after that before a trial would begin ? perhaps two years from now depending on motions and other pretrial actions.

Jeffrey Addicott, who previously served as the senior legal adviser to the U.S. Army's Special Forces, said the military justice system typically moves faster than civilian courts. But he said the international political implications may cause this case to drag on for years.

"When we have these high-publicity cases, the military becomes like a deer in the headlights. They have just one speed: extremely slow," Addicott said, adding that he expects the defense team to use all tactics to slow the process.

According to military lawyers and experts, now that the charges have been filed, the next step is for the military is to decide whether there is enough evidence to refer the charges to a preliminary hearing. That hearing, what the military calls an Article 32, would determine whether there's probable cause to believe a crime was committed and that the person charged did it.

Once the Article 32 is over, the hearing officer recommends to a general officer whether or not the case should go to trial. That general officer then decides whether the case should go to a court-martial in front of a military judge.

Throughout the proceedings, the lawyers will be able to file a wide range of motions, including requests for more time to review evidence.

Browne said he thinks the U.S. government will have difficulty proving its case against Bales because "there is no crime scene" and a lack of important physical evidence like fingerprints. And he has said he wants to visit Afghanistan.

Prosecutors, meanwhile, will rely on evidence collected from the villages, including any statements by witnesses and Afghan civilians who were injured that night, as well as any observations by other soldiers about Bales' conduct and his movement on or off the base.

Two military defense attorneys also have been assigned to his case.

Ophardt said Bales' family is still living on base but has the option of moving off at any time.

Santorum's Last Stand or Romney's Time to Seal the Deal?

CHICAGO - Basking in the glow of his commanding win in Illinois on Tuesday night, Mitt Romney delivered his victory speech in Schaumburg, Ill., but it may be another? state 40 miles north? that?once and for all seals the deal for the GOP front-runner: Wisconsin.

While Romney focused his?victory speech on a general election showdown with President Obama and his top strategist Eric Fehrnstrom called on other candidates to "step aside," the Republican primary seems destined to continue at least through April 3, when Wisconsin, along with Maryland and the District of Columbia, heads to the polls. It is there that Romney will have a real chance to end what has been a long, drawn-out primary.

With a 300 delegate lead over his closest rival, Rick Santorum - 563 to 263 - Romney, as evidenced by his speech in Schaumburg, is eager to focus his attacks on Obama rather than his fellow Republican hopefuls. Romney's resounding triumph in Illinois - he took 47 percent of the vote compared?with 35 percent for Santorum, a difference of more than 100,000 votes - gives the former Massachusetts governor a compelling argument for Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul to exit the race. But not one of the three has shown any inclination to do so. Gingrich and Paul, at this point, have become irrelevant in the primary, but Santorum still holds out faint hope of making a comeback.?If he is to pull that off,? he has to score an unexpected victory in the very near future.

?Santorum, it seems, will likely win in Louisiana on Saturday, but that will do little to change the momentum of the race. Come April 3, the former Pennsylvania senator will be hard-pressed to find a lot of support in Maryland and is not even on the ballot in D.C. After that, the next round of primaries does not take place until April 24, when New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania all vote. Only Pennsylvania is? remotely friendly territory for Santorum, but even?there the voters ?kicked him out of the Senate after?one term. It's not exactly a great home-field advantage.

That all makes April 3 in Wisconsin the last best chance for Santorum to get back into the race. Win the Badger State and Santorum will be back in the conversation, at least until April 24. Lose, and he will merely be an afterthought going forward, a dead man walking. Santorum will waste little time in making his case to Wisconsin voters. He heads there Saturday to address a conference in Milwaukee. Romney is also expected to visit the state later this month, while his wife, Ann, will campaign in Madison and Milwaukee on Thursday.

If past is prologue, Santorum will know that the road ahead is an uphill climb. In the past three Midwestern states to vote - Illinois, Ohio and Michigan - Santorum has suffered crucial defeats. In each state, Romney had better organization and far more money, a lethal combination for his rivals. In Illinois, for instance, Santorum failed to qualify for the ballot in four of the state's 18 congressional districts and was outspent by an eight to?one ?margin statewide and a 21 to one margin in the Chicago area. Making matters worse, Santorum did himself no favors by declaring that he did not care about the unemployment rate - this in a state where the jobless rate is a full point higher than the national average. What had once appeared to be a close race in Illinois ended up being anything but.

?Romney and his allies have already started to flex their financial muscle in Wisconsin. His super PAC - Restore Our Future - has bought around $1.3 million worth of airtime in the state, with ads on the air dating back to March 15. The Santorum campaign, by contrast, has? shelled out only $54,000 in Wisconsin to date, and his super PAC - the Red, White and Blue Fund - has yet to spend a dime there.

That does not bode well for Santorum's chances in a state that has 42 delegates on offer and the potential to snuff out any hope he has of pulling off a shocking upset. Another factor working against him is that Romney is viewed as the favorite in Waukesha County, a wealthy, educated area just to the west of Milwaukee. Romney so far has used his strength in the most urban areas of Illinois, Michigan and Ohio to catapult him to statewide victories. In Illinois, it was the Chicago area. In Michigan, around Detroit. And in Ohio, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus. In Wisconsin next month, Romney will hope to replicate that magic in Milwaukee and Madison.

Do not be surprised if he succeeds. And if Romney does take the Badger State - as well as D.C. and Maryland that same day - then it will be fair to declare the GOP race over once and for all, even if Santorum, Gingrich ?and Paul continue to argue otherwise.

Rick Santorum has had a good run. Where does he go from here?

To win the nomination, Rick Santorum needs 69 percent of the remaining delegates. Even a brokered convention may be elusive. After Louisiana on Saturday, the road ahead looks tough.

The upset Rick Santorum was hoping for in Illinois didn't come; instead, he lost to Mr. Romney by more than 11 points.

At this point, it's hard to envision anyone but Mitt Romney getting the GOP presidential nomination.

Yes, Mr. Santorum has had a better run than anyone would have predicted even a few months ago. He appeals to conservative Republicans, Evangelicals, and those who really, really want an alternative to Romney.

But the math is not in his favor. In order to get the nomination, Santorum would need to win 69 percent of the remaining delegates ? something which simply isn't going to happen.

His other hope ? which he and his team have become more vocal about in recent days ? is doing well enough to deny Romney the 1,144 delegates he needs, thereby delaying the decision until the August convention.

But that possibility is also incredibly slim, and would require a major screw-up by Romney. Currently, Romney only needs to win 46 percent of the remaining delegates to get to the magic number ? not a high hurdle. The implosion of Newt Gingrich's campaign (he got just 8 percent of the vote in Illinois) hasn't helped Santorum the way some predicted, and might make it even harder to keep Romney from steadily amassing delegates.

Moreover, it's not something most Republicans want.

"Whatever slim chances that Mr. Santorum has would depend on going to the floor in Tampa," wrote New York Times polling expert Nate Silver on Wednesday, calling the nomination contest now "a one-man race." "As this becomes increasingly clear to voters, they may come to see their choice as being less one between Mr. Romney and Mr. Santorum and more one between Mr. Romney and a brokered convention. Some of Mr. Santorum?s supporters may desert him once they view the race in those terms, making Mr. Romney?s path easier still."

Add to that Santorum's fundraising deficits: In the past month, his campaign reported raising $9 million to Romney's $12 million, and the Santorum campaign has $2.6 million in the bank compared with Romney's $7.3 million.

And yet, Santorum doesn't sound like he's planning to fold anytime soon.

Wajahat Ali: HuffJummah: 'The People of America': A Religious Sermon

This was Wajahat Ali's first khutbah (Friday religious sermon) given on March 16, 2012 at Duke University thanks to an invitation by Imam Abdullah T. Antepli, Duke's Muslim Chaplain.

Allah commands the believers in the Quran: "And be steadfast in patience, for verily Allah will not suffer the reward of the righteous to perish. (11:115)"

Today, I wanted to talk about the state of Ahl al Amreeka.

You must have heard of Ahl al America, right?

The people of America? The new tribe of America?

Us.

Everyone here who identifies as both an American and a Muslim -- you are members of Ahl al America.

Some would say we are the lucky ones, the blessed ones, the fortunate ones to be living in a democracy, a nation of opportunity, a country of liberties and freedoms.

But, many others, including perhaps most among us today, would ask if we, the Ahl al America, are indeed the blessed tribe, the fortunate tribe, the tribe of opportunity -- then why are we in so much pain?

Why are we forced to endure so much hardship, so much suffering, so much fear, prejudice, humiliation and uncertainty?

We are currently enduring one of the worst recessions of this nation's history. There is unemployment and lack of job security. The wealth disparity between the rich and the poor is at its largest, with no signs of receding. Families have lost their homes, and many of us here are in danger of losing our homes or our parents' homes.

College tuitions are skyrocketing, and college loans seem insurmountable. Crazy new diseases are rampant -- there's cancer and heart disease. There are floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis. And wars -- can't forget wars. We are a nation obsessed with wars, immersed in two major ones as we speak.

How do we, the Ahl al Amreeka, endure it?

Especially when Muslim is the most toxic brand name in America and Islam is about as popular as bubonic plague? How do we endure the pain?

Allah has given us two spiritual weapons of choice, and it's up to us if we want to employ them: sabr (patience) and shukr (gratitude.) The prophets and scholars say sabr and shukr also happen to be the two keys that will unlock the gates of heaven; without them, you might not have celestial accommodations.

Sabr -- patience, to patiently endure ... the hardships, the failures, the disappointments, the bitterness, the crushed dreams, the slanders and the humiliation.

As mentioned, Allah has commanded sabr in the Qur'an: "And be steadfast in patience, for verily Allah will not suffer the reward of the righteous to perish. (11:115)"

He adds: "But give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere. Those who say, when afflicted with calamity, 'To Allah we belong, and to Him is our return.' They are those on whom descend blessings from their Lord, and mercy. They are the ones who receive guidance. (2:155-157)"

So, there's sabr.

And there's also shukr -- gratitude. To have thankfulness, appreciation, wonderment, joy and contentment despite all the chaos, the noise and the negative baggage of life.

Allah commands the believers in the Surat Al-Baqarah [verse 152]: "So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me."

And Allah gives us signs in the Qur'an -- the stories of the prophets, those who are innocent and beloved to God, but still forced to endure tremendous suffering despite or in spite of their piety:

? Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), who was thrown in the well, by his brothers no less, and later falsely imprisoned due to no fault of his own.

? Ayoob (Job), whose only crime was that he was a great man and a great prophet who loved his Creator and followed His every command. And what was his prize? He was tormented with
physical hardship, deformity and public humiliation.

? Ibrahim (Abraham) who was a friend of Allah, forced to endure the fire and suffer years without
offspring.

? The verse commanding patience is from chapter 11, entitled Surat al Hud, named after the Prophet Hud, whose own people, the people of 'Ad, rejected his message, mocked him and exiled him.

? And, of course, we can't forget to mention the tremendous ordeals and struggles of habiballah, Prophet Muhammad, the beloved of Allah who also was exiled from his homeland, betrayed by his tribe, hunted down, mocked, and endlessly ridiculed.

They endured all their hardships and trials with sabr, and throughout it all they had shukr.

And all of them received a massive ROI (return on investment) in the deen (the spiritual world) and the dunya (the physical world.)

Joseph became the vizier of the pharaoh, the most powerful man at that time. Job's health and prosperity miraculously returned, even better than before. Ibrahim survived the fire and is now seen as the father of all the major monotheistic religions. Hud was quite literally the last man standing. And Prophet Muhammad? Well, we know that story.

Allah fulfilled His promise.

But, it seems having sabr and shukr is not enough, because these two recipes also require hope. It's a necessary ingredient -- hope that things will get better; hope that Allah will create a way out of the most impossible situations. And, in even in this bleak situation, it behooves us to exhale, take a step back and look at what other communities have endured and continue to endure.

Look at the community members of the Prophet, peace be upon him -- exiled and hunted, many times tortured and killed. Look at Muslims in the 13th century facing the destructive Mongol hordes, which lay to waste every city they encountered, pillaging and murdering with abandon. Everyone believed it would be the end of Islam.

Look at Muslims in 15th century Spain -- imprisoned, tortured, killed and then exiled along with the Jews as a result of the Spanish Inquisition. And, how about Muslims and Americans right here, right now? Forget looking to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia, and Sudan, just drive around lower income neighborhoods to see the despair and hardship your neighbors are facing and enduring?

It also benefits us to look at the sabr, shukr and hope of the companions.

Out of love for his Prophet, Ali volunteered to lie in the Prophet's bed in his stead, allowing the Prophet to escape since assassins were plotting to kill him that very same night as he slept in his bed. Ali survived the night, and later said it was the best night's sleep he ever had.

Or, how about the love of companion Abu Bakr? He escorted the Prophet Muhammad and hid with him in the cave as assassins were in hot pursuit. All that separated them from certain death was a flimsy cobweb of a spider.

And speaking of love -- despite all the adversity and hardship, look at the love the Prophet Muhammad had for his community. He said to his believers, "Each and everyone one of you is a shepherd, and each and every one of you is responsible for his flock"

This flock includes our family and our fiends, but it also includes our neighbors and our community members.

Look at how the Prophet loved his Creator, how he loved his companions, how he loved his community and prayed for them until the end, always, asking Allah to bestow mercy on the "ummati, ummati, ummati. (my community, my community, my community)"

And look how he showed love to his neighbors and his enemies. They, who used to throw trash at him; slander him to his face; insult him; harass him, his family, his allies and his followers; they even exiled him.

And what was his response?

Most of the times, his response was simply a smile; other times his response was a dua'a (a prayer) to Allah to guide his enemies on the straight path; often times his response was to simply ignore the noise and simply walk forward.

But don't be confused or mistaken, the Prophet ignoring them was not an example of inaction. In fact, it was a response -- an elegant response. He was also proactive. He engaged in dialogue, in treaties, and he invested in relationships. Imagine - returning to Mecca and forgiving those very same people whom you know killed your family members, your companions and also tried to kill you?

Imagine walking amongst those whom you know still loathe you, but without ever compromising your personal character or moral integrity? Despite the pain, the Prophet still exercised love.

You might be thinking right now:

OK, awesome, Wajahat. Great -- sabr, shukr, hope and love. Wonderful. Got it. Faaaan-tastic. Thanks for that. Really helps me in my life and all my problems. You know problems? Real tangible problems?

Because you're expecting me to have sabr and shukr while I'm dealing with loans, bills, stress, potential foreclosures, and my crazy family, which is just the icing on the cake on top of all this insane Islamophobia?

And you say sabr? Patience? The only patience I know is the excellent Guns N' Roses song from the 80's. The only sabr I know is a light saber, and the last time I packed a plastic light saber I had to spend two hours getting grilled by TSA security.

Oh, and you're saying don't fear, right? Even though this entire nation is drowning in an ocean of fear -- fear of immigrants, fear of our neighbors, fear of people with multisyllabic last names, fear of people with "Hussein" in their middle name, fear of, well, people like ME.

Oh, and you're saying invest in hope? In that dangerous commodity known as hope? Just like the companions of the Prophet? Well, I don't have an Ali who will sleep in my bed to protect me. I have Abid who will come over my apartment at 2 a.m., sleep in my bed without my permission, and leave it smelling like four-day old South Asian food. I don't have an Abu Bakr. I have Abdullah who invites himself over, eats all mom's food, plays my PS3 and has cobwebs around him at all times because he doesn't take a shower. Those are my companions.

Oh, and love?

Love my neighbors and my enemies? Here's what my neighbors think of me; me who has tried his whole life to be a good man, a good Muslim, a good American and a good neighbor: They think I'm a radical stealth jihadist who wants to create Caliphornia and make them submit to the Sharia. They think I want replace McDonalds arches with minarets, force the statue of liberty to wear a burqah, and slaughter Porky Pig.

Oh, and you want me to love Allah and His Prophet?

Great, I do so publicly, and what happens? I get surveillance by local and federal law enforcement. My kids at school are now bullied for being Muslim. My local mosque, which has been around for 30 years, is now being protested. And my elected officials are raising money and votes by saying they're going to implement loyalty oaths against me to test if I'm America-holic enough.

They don't see me as a neighbor, or as a friend. They see me as a suspect.

And you're saying I should still have sabr, shukr, hope and love? Despite all the fear and the hate and the pain? You're saying to still love Allah, and his messenger, and his creations? You still want me to love them? That's what you're saying?

Yes.

That's exactly what I'm saying.

Because we can take it. Because we can endure it. Because we can and will rise above it. It's a promise by Allah, and verily Allah always keeps his promise. "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear ... (Qur'an, 2:286)"

Anything and everything you are facing as an individual, as a community, as a nation, you, me, we - we can take it. We can and will endure it. It will not break us.

Your test, our test as Ahl al Amreeka, is not a new one. This story has happened before, many, many times. We're simply the characters this time around.

But, we can take it. And we're supposed to take it. Because Allah says this is all part of the course:
He says, "And We shall certainly test you, until We know those of you who strive their utmost (for God) and who are the steadfast; and We shall test your reported mettle. (Qur'an 47:31)"

That's mettle: m-e-t-t-l-e -- it means your strength, your vigor.

And you can deny Allah, and you can deny having faith in Allah. But you can't deny the Prophet Muhammad. He was here. He lived. He suffered. He endured it. He rose above it. And, he is a model for us; a reflection, a daily guide on how to lead our lives through hardship.

Look at how he thought of his Creator, how he thought of his neighbors, how he thought of his community throughout all the pain. And, Allah promises us that he loves us. In fact, the Prophet is the beloved of Allah. And as we see, time and time again, with love there always comes pain.

Love and pain. They go hand in hand. Always.

And some might say, "Wow! Awesome. So, Allah is a sadist! Great! Interesting way of showing love, God! Thanks for asking us to be masochists!"

Well, that's one way of looking at it.

But another perspective -- an Islamic perspective, a spiritual perspective -- suggests this is merely a way of Allah testing our mettle (our resolve, our strength, our vigor.)

And speaking of metal: m-e-t-a-l. How does one produce metal from its ore? By subjecting it to fire. Through the process of smelting. It endures the fire, only to come out stronger at the end.

So, this adversity and troubled times is a way of refining the Ahl al Amreeka, of sharpening us, of honing our spiritual light sabers, of purifying us, of evolving us through a gauntlet of pain and struggle, so that we emerge harder, better, faster, stronger.

And the end result is not perfection. We won't be perfect. And we are not perfect. We are not meant to be perfect. We are fallible. Muslims suffer needlessly in their ridiculous romantic quest to achieve some sortof intangible perfection. Especially Muslim Student Association kids, they are often so hard on themselves.

I know. I was one of them.

It's good to remember a quote from Hadrat Ali: "Do not be so hard on yourself lest you break but do not be so soft, lest you be squeezed."

So, I hope you learn first and foremost to forgive yourselves for being human; humans who make mistakes time to time. Just like our neighbors, some of them who are making some pretty big mistakes concerning Muslims right now.

And it's time we, as a Muslim community, allow ourselves to forgive ourselves for being human; and, it's also time for us to learn to love ourselves again in a spiritually healthy way. Because, we need individuals to be spiritually healthy, because spiritually healthy individuals create spiritually healthy communities, which in turn creates a spiritually healthy nation, God willing.

And remember this: A strong spirit can always sustain a weak body. But a weakened spirit will not endure, even it is housed in the strongest of bodies. Right now, it seems that Ahl al Amreeka has a weakened body, but I assure you we have all the spiritual ingredients to fuel our spiritual light sabers to restore us to our strong, vibrant spirit.

So, may we have sabr, shukr, hope, and the audacity to love -- in spite of the pain -- so we can truly emerge as the Ahl al Amreeka we're meant to be.

May Allah forgive us for our sins -- the ones we've done knowingly and unknowingly; may he envelop us in His mercy, and may keep us on the straight path.

Part Two

Allow me to be ambitious and to expand on themes of the first half of the khutbah. I'll share a little secret with you. I'm going to tell you the key ingredients most great artists have: 1) love and 2) pain.

These are some of the most -- if not the most -- powerful emotions and feelings a human can experience.

When it comes down to it, love and pain generally inspire most art, really. Most rock songs are about having a crush on a girl, or breaking up with a girl, right?

Arguably, the greatest contributors to American culture and art are Africans Americans and Jewish Americans. We all know their history -- tremendous suffering, genocide, pain, humiliation, degradations. But also love -- love for life, for honor, for family, for traditions, for one another.

It's no wonder those emotions exploded -- figuratively -- and were unleashed through artistic enterprises that allowed them to create something completely new, mixing together their respective history, culture and identity but infusing it with an original Amreekan flavor.

In fact, look at Rumi and his poetry. His "Mathnavi": His epic volume of poetry written in Farsi. Rumi is the bestselling poet in America today. He outsells Frost and Dickinson. He was born 850 years ago.

And,he was Muslim. He was born in Afghanistan and then moving to Turkey following the Mongol invasion. He was a supreme lover of Allah and his Prophet.

Don't let people fool you: Rumi was a devout, practicing Muslim; a scholar, a jurist, a teacher -and only later, an artist and poet. And yet his intense burning love for the Divine and for lovers of the Divine caused him tremendous pain; almost unbearable suffering and personal turmoil.

Especially his love for his friend and mentor Shams-i-Tabriz. When Shams suddenly left one day, there was a void in Rumi. There was a pang. There was an immense pain that had to be quenched. Why?

Because lovers hate being separated. You want to be near your beloved. For some that's the dunya (the world), but for the lucky few, that means Allah and the deen (the spiritual world.)

So due to his love for the Divine and for his love of those who are beloved to the Divine, and due to his pain of being separated from his beloved, Rumi was inspired to unleash the floodgates of emotions, which resulted in the best-selling poetry of today. Something originally Islamic has now elegantly fused itself with the cultural fabric of America, and the poetry of a Muslim man who lived 800 years ago now heals hearts, brings joy, unites lovers, gives us Facebook quotes and inspires spiritual contentment for millions around the world.

And, even in the past 10 years we, American Muslims, the Ahl al Amreeka, have seen a figurative explosion of creativity. I believe we are witnessing a renaissance -- one that is unique for the world and this nation; one that is created by individuals who are both American and Muslim - YOU, who
have endured and continue to endure.

Members of a tribe that is messy but resilient -- much like America. We have entrepreneurs, engineers, architects, doctors, philanthropists, stand-up comedians, journalists, academics and even imams. This is a volatile time, but an exciting time -- one that is ripe for a renaissance; a rebirth.

And speaking of creation and artistry -- let's not forget the original artist -- Allah.

Look. Look around you at the diversity of Allah's creation. There's black, white, Yemeni, Desi, Egyptian, Syrian, and even miscellaneous, right here in this room -- in Amreeka. Allah says in the Qur'an: "Verily, he made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other, not that ye may despise (each other)."

Reflect on His design and artistry. Just take a moment to check out His brush strokes. He wasn't painting with one color, and definitely not in one style. And then what does He do with all these different colors?

He splashes them on a blank canvas called Amreeka. A-mer-eeka. America. The land that is our home. The messy melting pot of the universe with colors splashed all around -- but nonetheless there's still poetry to the chaos.

And all of this was inspired by Allah's love for his creation. And you forget that we, despite all our differences, are part of the same tribe. We're Muslim, and we're American.

Whether you want to admit it or not, you can't escape it. We all belong, equally, to the same tribe, a new tribe, the tribe of "Ahl Al America" -- The people of Amreeka.

So, it's our duty to Allah, to ourselves, our community and our neighbors, as shepherds - as Prophet Muhammad mentioned was our role -- to start building here. Start investing here. Start painting here -- even in present times of distress and chaos and turmoil and pain.

Because we have all the spiritual ingredients and colors given to us by the Lead Painter -- we have an inventory consisting of sabr, shukr, hope and love.

So, may we as individuals and as a community create our masterpiece here for everyone and anyone to benefit from and see. So, that when it's all done, and when it's time for us to hang up our paintbrush, that we may proudly show off our creations and say with dignity and honor -- this here, this was created by one from the Ahl al America!

So, may we love Allah like the prophet loved Allah. May we love the prophet like his companions loved him. And may we, the Ahl al Amreeka, be the shepherds of our greater community. May we love our neighbors, our community, our friends, our enemies, and especially ourselves -- even though it may be painful from time to time.

I have tremendous shukr that you had the sabr to endure my first khutbah. Thank you.

Currently, an individual can gift, over his lifetime, no more than $5.12 million tax-free. Starting in 2013, the lifetime limits on gift tax will fall from $5.12 million to $1 million. This change in tax exemption rates between 2012 and 2013 could factor into your small business succession plans.

The complicated history of the gift and estate tax dates back to the tax cuts passed under President George W. Bush, starting in 2001.?

Those laws enforced by Bush gradually increased the dollar amount exempt from gift and estate taxes. Congress wrote the law to expire in 10 years, with the exemption reverting back to the old levels in 2011. In December 2010, the Tax Relief, Unemployment InsuranceReauthorization, and Job Creation Acts were signed into my by President Barack Obama as a compromise bill, extending the Bush cuts through 2012 and holding the gift tax exemption at $5 million ($5.12 million in 2012, adjusted for inflation).? ?Assuming a parent wants to turn over 100 percent of the business to his children, the best year to do it is in 2012,? (BusinessWeek.com). There are many other factors to consider in business succession including managerial roles, how the business assets will be divided up between the children, and whether the company founder is ready to give up complete control (BusinessWeek.com).? Blair Trippe, Partner and Consultant at Continuity Family Business Consulting, says to also carefully think about voting control when transferring ownership of a family business. You wouldn?t want siblings who own and work in the business to be essentially working for their siblings who also are owners. Those not actively in the business may not be in a position to make good decisions for the business and hence shouldn?t have voting control.? This exemption on gift tax expiration is the perfect opportunity to decide who will take the reins of the business and put the plan into action. Oftentimes business owners hesitate to make that call because they worry about whether their offspring can handle the money and responsibility, and whether they will be able to withdraw enough funds from the business to live comfortably in retirement.?

Blair Trippe also says it?s not just about saving on taxes. ?Be sure not only to consider tax savings, but to consider what will be thought of as ?fair? in terms of diving up assets, and what will benefit the family most over the long term. This can be approached in many different way so it?s important to be clear on the intentions behind the transfer of ownership, not just the savings on the taxes.?

Transitioning a business from one generation to the next is probably the most difficult and complex process a family business will face. Exotic Pets, Large Zoo Animals & Keeping Exotic Animals as Pets ...

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Two kinds of people keep otherwise wild animals as pets: trained animal rights activists and crazy people. If you don?t run a non-profit organization that takes in hundreds of thousands in donations every year, guess which one you are? You ?might remember a story from a few months ago about a guy who was keeping lions and other exotic creatures in trailers on his property. He eventually let them go (not into the wild, but just let them go), leading to the deaths of many of those animals.

I think the most shocking thing about this infographic is how incredibly inexpensive Olive Baboons are. I?m imagining several nightmare scenarios in which the baboon locks me out of my car, but it might be worth the risk at only $1,000. What dream exotic pet would you like to own, but you shouldn?t?

NY Mets owners settle Madoff case, avoid trial

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The owners of the New York Mets agreed to pay $162 million to settle a lawsuit by the trustee seeking money for the victims of Bernard Madoff's fraud, a deal that eases pressure on the owners of the cash-strapped baseball team.

The pact was announced in U.S. District Court in New York on Monday just as a trial was about to start. It was a victory for brothers-in-law Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz and their family-run Sterling Equities real estate, baseball and hedge-fund empire.

They will not have to pay out any cash immediately and the trustee, Irving Picard, dropped his allegation that they turned a blind eye to Madoff's fraud.

For the trustee, the settlement could provide a template for other cases still pending against hundreds of individuals, funds and banks such as HSBC Holdings Plc, JPMorgan Chase & Co and UBS AG.

Wilpon and Katz were accused of acting in bad faith in their dealings with Madoff over 25 years until December 2008. Their case would have been the first involving the imprisoned financier to go to trial.

The Mets, who live in the shadow of the much more successful, world-famous New York Yankees, have struggled in recent years. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has been quoted as saying the team lost $70 million last year. Forbes magazine said in 2011 that the team was worth $747 million.

The settlement is a "very positive moment for the team and the Wilpon family," said Robert Boland, academic chair at New York University's Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism and Sports.

Beyond the Madoff fraud, the owners have dealt with a struggling team and a financial hit to their commercial real estate business.

"Solving one of those issues will make it easier," he said.

Separately on Monday, the Wall Street Journal reported the Mets closed a sale last week of 12 minority stakes in the team for $20 million apiece, or a total of $240 million, citing two sources with knowledge of the deals.

The proceeds from the sales will repay a $25 million loan from Major League Baseball and a $40 million loan to Bank of America, the sources told WSJ. Mets didn't immediately return requests outside normal business hours for a comment on the report.

The court settlement calls for payments over a five-year period and Wilpon and Katz will not have to pay any cash until the fourth year. The $162 million could end up being mostly paid with money returning to the owners' Sterling Equities firm as a result of being a victim of the fraud.

Picard had accused the owners of ignoring warning signs that Madoff was running a fraud. Wilpon, Katz and their relatives denied the accusations and said they were also victims.

Both sides can claim victory, according to Neal Levin, a partner at law firm Freeborn & Peters LLP in Chicago, who specializes in recoveries for fraud victims.

"If I'm Picard, I'm going to try and use it as a template. But if I'm the target, I'm going to say that this is a very subjective analysis and every case is unique."

'FICTITIOUS PROFITS'

Picard's original complaint was filed in bankruptcy court in December 2010, seeking $1 billion, but it was whittled down to $386 million. If a jury had ruled against the Mets owners, they would have been liable for $303 million on top of as much as $83.3 million in "fictitious profits."

People involved in the litigation said the pressure of an upcoming trial led to the agreement.

"This is common sense," former New York State Governor Mario Cuomo, who oversaw mediation of the dispute, told reporters outside the courtroom. "There's no artistry here."

He said Wilpon and Katz were not personally involved in the negotiations.

For Picard and his legal team, the settlement brings an additional $162 million into the pot to pay back victims of Madoff's fraud, the biggest in investment history.

Madoff is in prison for his Ponzi scheme, in which he paid old clients with the money from new investments.

"This settlement is for the benefit of all the customers," said David Sheehan, the lead lawyer for Picard.

Picard estimates Madoff customers were defrauded of about $20 billion overall. He has said he will try to recover as much money as he can through the courts. So far, he has won settlements amounting to $9.1 billion.

Under the settlement, Wilpon, Katz and their partners at Sterling Equities essentially agreed to pay "fictitious profits" of about $162 million that the Sterling parties withdrew in the six years before Madoff's scheme collapsed in December 2008. U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff previously ruled the defendants were liable for two years of profits, $83.3 million.

"The settlement that we announced in court confirms that Mr. Wilpon and Mr. Katz and their partners acted at all times in good faith and did not act willfully blind," said Robert Wise, one of their lawyers.

The Sterling parties' customer claims of about $178 million will be entitled to recovery on the same basis as other customers of the Madoff firm. Any pro rata distributions would be used to reduce the Sterling parties' settlement obligation.

The settlement was reached on Friday, but kept secret until Monday, when Rakoff announced it in court. The two sides agreed not to make any disparaging statement about each other or the settlement.

"All I have to say is, love is wonderful," the judge said. He set April 13 for final approval of the deal.

The case is Picard v. Katz et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 11-03605.
