Producer behind fun. takes center stage at Grammys

(AP) ? When music producer Jeff Bhasker ? the mastermind behind fun.'s breakthrough ? had thoughts of becoming a musician, the high school student in the jazz band figured he would play keyboard for a talented singer looking to carve a space in the musical universe.

"In the jazz world you become a side man, say with like Miles Davis. You become Miles Davis' keyboard player and then you learn from Miles, and then you have your own group," he explained.

The eager musician was hoping to have a breakthrough like Herbie Hancock did with Davis. And Bhasker did ? but with Kanye West.

The Berklee College of Music graduate began playing piano for the multiplatinum rapper in 2008. And then he became West's musical director. And then the two went into the recording studio.

"I learned so much from being around that moment and grabbing on to the rocket. It happened really fast," said Bhasker, who produced several tracks on West's albums, "808's & Heartbreak" and "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy."

And in between those West records, Bhasker's name ? and drum-filled sound ? popped up on credible liner notes: He produced for Alicia Keys. And Jay-Z. And Beyonce. And Bruno Mars.

And now the producer is really having fun ? thanks to the band fun.

Crafting anthemic jams like "We Are Young" and "Some Nights" for the New York-based trio ? who released their underwhelming debut in 2009 ? not only made fun. a household name, it made Bhasker even bigger. Now the hitmaker is nominated for four Grammy Awards, including non-classical producer of the year and album of the year for helming all 11 tracks on fun.'s sophomore release, "Some Nights."

"First and foremost, it's about hearing for him. He's not out to make a quick buck," said Nate Ruess, the lead singer of fun. "You meet a lot of producers, especially in the pop world, where they don't have any emotional attachment to the music. I've even sat in like writing sessions with people where it's just lifeless, and Jeff is the exact opposite. He brings emotion. He only wants to do things that move him."

The Grammys stage isn't unfamiliar to Bhasker ? he's already won two trophies for best rap song in 2009 and 2011 for co-writing Jay-Z's "Run This Town" and West's "All of the Lights." This year, he's also nominated for record and song of the year for his work on fun.'s No. 1 hit "We Are Young." The band earned six nominations ? including best new artist ? and are tied for most nominations at the Feb. 10 awards show.

"The whole time we were making the album I really, every day I was saying, 'We're making album of the year,'" Bhasker said of producing "Some Nights."

Ruess said he recruited Bhasker to executive produce his band's entire album because of the producer's impressive resume and style. Bhasker helped usher in West's Auto-Tune-flavored, melodic and synth-pop sound in 2008, co-producing songs like "Love Lockdown" and "Paranoid." Months after fun. released its album, Taylor Swift worked with Bhasker on two songs for her best-selling "Red" album, which takes the singer even further from her country roots to pop domination.

Oh, and the Rolling Stones called Bhasker, too.

"It's so tricky because you don't want to mess with the Rolling Stones and the essence of what they do," said Bhasker, who produced "radio mixes" of the band's new jams, "Doom and Gloom" and "One More Shot." ''But I tried to bring a little bit of a contemporary twist to it."

Mars, who used to play live with Bhasker when they met years ago, also enlisted the hitmaker to co-produce the majority of his recently released sophomore album, "Unorthodox Jukebox."

"My brother would play drums and I'd play guitar, and I would beg Jeff ? this amazing, incredible piano player, producer, musical genius ? to come perform with me so I could make this 100 bucks, and he would drive all the way from Santa Monica to the Valley to do these gigs with me," Mars said of his relationship with Bhasker years ago. "And we'd play covers and have fun and get drunk."

Mars said Bhasker ? whom he calls a "mad scientist" of a producer ? was one of the first people he collaborated with when he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career.

"We were both kind of wet behind the ears. And then one day he called me and was like, 'I'm going on tour with Kanye West' and I was like, 'What about the band bro? What about the band?' He said, 'F your band,'" Mars recalled in laughs. "And it's nice to reunite and do what we never did ? which was finish a song."

Indian-born Bhasker, who grew up in New Mexico, said he decided in high school that he was going to pursue music professionally, though his family was full of doctors and was unsure about his choice. Bhasker says he ? and his relatives ? are happy he chose a musical route, and he'll get to show even more of himself when he releases his solo debut, "Born on the 4th of July," this year. He performs under the moniker Billy Kraven and says the album's theme is about soldiers, "what they have to face when they go to war and the concept of death."

"I really got sick of writing songs about love and girls, which is the great basis of it, but something in me wanted to write what was going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, and if anything, just to have a conversation about it," explained Bhasker, who said he drew inspiration from listening to NPR and watching the HBO series "Generation Kill."

"In the past in rock 'n' roll and pop music, it was more common to address social issues and bring people together," he added.

He says he'll likely release the album independently and that he's already started work on a second album. He could even call in some of his famous friends for assistance ? or not.

"I do have Nate on one song and Bruno singing background in a very subtle way," he said. "But I think I'm just going to keep it pure."

Los Angeles mayoral hopefuls debate cutting budget, trimming pensions

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Los Angeles' five mayoral candidates sparred over its ailing economy Monday night, each claiming to be best qualified to reduce a persistent public deficit, reform the public pension system and attract business to the second-largest U.S. city.

The candidates, vying to succeed Antonio Villaraigosa, skirmished in a televised debate at the city's University of California over how best to close an expected $200 million budget shortfall.

"We're talking about bankruptcy in Los Angeles," said candidate Kevin James, a former assistant U.S. attorney and the lone Republican in the race. "That does not instill confidence ...in businesses that are looking at moving to our great city."

The candidates agreed the city must negotiate with its powerful unions to reduce the cost of pensions for city workers that threaten to further deepen its deficit.

"If we don't have a viable pension system in the city of Los Angeles, they don't have a pension later on," City Controller Wendy Greuel said.

City Council members Eric Garcetti and Jan Perry each argued that their years of leadership and experience dealing with unions made them the best suited to deal with budgetary issues.

Garcetti said he negotiated concessions from current and future union workers that have saved the city millions of dollars. "You need the next mayor to have those qualities," he said. "We can't tax and cut our way out of this."

James touted his independence, saying he wouldn't be beholden to unions during pension talks, he said.

Former technology executive Emanuel Pleitez pointed to his successes in the private sector and his experience as an economic adviser to the Obama Administration.

Garcetti and Greuel have raised the most money thus far - about $3.6 million each, according to campaign filings with the city.

A primary election will be held on March 5, with a runoff on May 21 pitting the top two finishers against one another, unless one candidate receives a majority of votes in the March primary. The new mayor will be sworn in on July 1.

This is the race city's first competitive mayoral election since Villaraigosa took office in 2005. He easily won re-election in 2009 but is now restricted from seeking another term.

NMMA's PR Program Bumps up Media Presence | RV Business

There were 1,400 stories about boating and the boating lifestyle in media outlets last year prompted by the efforts of Discover Boating, the group said after its 2012 tally of press coverage.

Soundings Trade Only reported that the coverage provided an estimated 110 million media impressions, the group announced.

Just three weeks into 2013, the public relations team of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) ? the group that manages the national Discover Boating campaign ? had secured 381 positive news stories about the marine industry, the lifestyle and shows.

?Public relations has been a significant element of Discover Boating and NMMA marketing efforts because it allows us to tell the boating story through a variety of media and communicate directly with the public in a meaningful way,? NMMA vice president of marketing Ellen Hopkins told Soundings Trade Only in an e-mail.

Discover Boating had success pitching a variety of topics, from ?Top 10 Boating Destinations? to ?How to Get Started,? Hopkins said.

?One of the areas discussed at length during the Growth Summit was the need to improve the sharing of information, resources and successes across the broader industry,? Hopkins told Trade Only in an email.

?With Discover Boating and NMMA public relations specifically, there?s a lot of great work being done behind the scenes that sometimes only a board of directors knows about.?

Charlize Theron's 'Hatfields & McCoys' Update Gets NBC Pickup

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - NBC has ordered the drama pilot "Hatfields & McCoys," a modern-day tale of the famously warring families from a team that includes executive producer Charlize Theron.

The series bears no relation to History's hit miniseries of the same name, which aired last year. But it does trade on the same legend of feuding West Virginia families.

In the new version, the families have moved to nearby Pittsburgh, where a startling death rekindles the feud. The blue-collar McCoys battle the wealthy Hatfields for control of the city.

And no, they aren't fighting over which family gets to not be in charge of Pittsburgh, which is a lovely place, if you've ever been.

The series is written and executive produced by John Glenn, with Theron, A.J. Dix, Dawn Olmstead, and Beau Flynn also executive producing. It comes from ABCS, Denver & Delilah,Tower Hill, Beau Flynn Productions and Grady Girl.

PASAY CITY, METRO MANILA ? Betsy Westerndrop?s love affair with the Manila Bay sunset started in the 1950s as a young bride who came to the country accompanying her Filipino-Spanish husband Antonio Brias to his homeland.

The skyscape reflected in the clear water has always been a fascination for the Spanish painter, with the symphony of changing colors and moving clouds remains vivid in her memory like the first time she saw them.

Betsy?s husband, who was then working for San Miguel Corporation, would fetch her from their Ermita apartment and drive by Dewey Boulevard (now Roxas Boulevard) to witness the sunset.

?Filipinos are very lucky to have the Manila sunset, it is very beautiful. This is a very special part of the Philippines that I love and feel very deep connection for,? she says.

Years later after her husband died, she continued to stay in their home ? a large part of which doubles as her studio ? that overlooks Manila?s iconic sunrise and sunset.

Returning to Madrid, she often told friend she will never exchange those years of basking in the beauty of Manila Bay sunset. It was her favorite subject despite friends requesting that she paint Spanish sunsets for a change.

Prior to visiting the Philippines, Betsy was already a well-known figure among Spain?s aristocrats for her detailed portraits and lush floral bouquets. The transition of her work to more personal subjects such as personal portraits and now, the abstract skyscapes or atmosferografias, depicts the evolution and personal journey of the artist.

What separates her work from other ?nature painters ? is that her skyscapes ?evolved into more abstract passages of light, color and movement, a mirror of her own personal and worldly musings,? says Singapore-based art dealer Valentine Willie.

?I paint not the water, not the sea. I paint the sky. There is no movement in the water. It is like a mirror,? explains Betsy, who, at the age of 95, still paints at her home studio every day.

Her paintings average from four to seven high, which allows for more space to see the patterns of color and movements in her painting ? quite different from usual sunset paintings that depict the sky and the sun as just part of the bigger picture.

During an interview at her Makati studio, Betsy showed some of her unfinished work still tied to a scaffolding.

?I paint every day. Some paintings I finish in just hours, others I finish in months. The colors I use and the brushstrokes also depend on my mood and how I remembered the sunset,? she says while pointing toward the calm aquamarine skyscape painting framed alongside a bold skyscape with lots of red and violet and harsh brushstrokes.

One can also see the numerous brushes dipped in water to clean off the acrylic paint that Betsy must have used the prior day. The artist has long discarded oils and prefers water-based acrylic, which has a consistency of oil minus the long drying time and fumes.

Art critic Cid Reyes compares Betsy?s skyscape series to the works JMW Turner, the 18th century British Romantic painter known for his storm-tossed seascapes, lashing rains and winds.

Eva McGovern, curator of Manila Contemporary, says Betsy?s classic approach makes her work more accessible to art collectors. The sheer size of the skyscape paintings are actually some of the biggest that Manila Contemporary has exhibited so far.

?Landscapes are a very popular subject but Betsy?s approach is unique. The atmosferografias are like windows to Betsy?s emotions?they evoke feelings of serenity, joy and anger,? Eva says.

The exhibit also features never-before seen paintings from Betsy?s personal collection, including portraits of her and her family in intimate moments placed alongside a domestic interior setting for backdrop so museum-goers can fully appreciate their beauty.

The paintings are on view until February 10 at Manila Contemporary?s showroom in Whitespace along Pasong Tamo Extension. Betsy says she will be present for the duration of the exhibit to welcome questions from anyone interested in her work.

Asian shares rally, eye Fed, U.S. data

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares rallied on Tuesday as recent selling drew bargain hunters ahead of more U.S. economic data and a Federal Reserve policy decision later in the week that may offer clues to the Fed's stimulus plans.

European markets were seen following Asia higher, with financial spread-betters predicting London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> would open up as much as 0.3 percent.

U.S. stock futures were up 0.1 percent, hinting at a firm Wall Street start. <.l><.eu><.n/>

Solid U.S. earnings and an improving U.S. business spending gauge have combined with a recent run of positive global economic data, along with signs of easing financial stress in the euro zone, putting upwards pressure on Treasury yields.

Further signs of brightening U.S. growth prospects would fuel speculation the Fed may consider pulling back on aggressive easing stimulus. The Fed ends a two-day policy meeting on Wednesday.

The first estimate of U.S. fourth-quarter gross domestic product also will be released on Wednesday, followed by non-farm payrolls on Friday.

Few expect any immediate change to the Fed's very accommodative monetary stance while other central banks such as the Bank of Japan also embark on fresh easing to help spur economic activities. India's central bank cut interest rates on Tuesday for the first time in nine months.

The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> rallied 0.9 percent to snap a four-day losing streak, led by a 1.1 percent jump in Australian shares <.axjo> to a fresh 21-month high on gains in financial shares.

"It seems that a lower interest rate environment is starting to improve confidence among the Australian business community. Mix this in with the China rebound and we have a sharp rise in confidence," said Ben Taylor, sales trader at CMC Markets.

South Korean shares <.ks11>, which slumped to an 8-week low on Monday, rebounded 0.8 percent.

Japan's Nikkei stock average <.n225> reversed earlier declines and closed up 0.4 percent, buoyed by optimism over earnings of major banks. <.t/>

"With yields on U.S. Treasury and German government bonds inching higher, one might say investors may be shifting funds to riskier assets from safe-havens," said Yuji Saito, director of foreign exchange at Credit Agricole in Tokyo.

The benchmark U.S. 10-year note yield briefly pierced 2 percent on Monday for the first time since last April, and inched up 2.5 basis points (bps) in Asia from New York close. The 10-year Japanese government bond yield also rose.

Naka Matsuzawa, fixed income strategist at Nomura Securities, said in research note that a sell-off in 5-year Treasury notes over the last two days "would not have occurred unless expectations of an economic recovery have gained ground to the extent that the monetary policy outlook begins to change."

"The market is aware that risks are toward more hawkish FOMC statements in the future rather than dovish ones," considering a pick-up in the U.S. economic recovery and stock market rally, as well as the underlying global risk-on trend, he said.

STUBBORN YEN

Yen selling paused, helping to bolster the benchmark South Korean stock index which is vulnerable to exchange rate swings as exporters lead market capitalization.

The dollar fell 0.1 percent to 90.78 yen after touching 91.32 on Monday, its highest level since June 2010, while the euro recouped earlier losses against the yen to steady around 122.10 yen after hitting 122.91 on Monday, its highest point since April.

The euro was at $1.3450, not far from an 11-month high of $1.3480 hit on Friday.

The euro's strength sharply contrasted with the crumbling pound, which has been pressured by worries about the weak UK economy, prospects of more monetary easing by the Bank of England and the UK's unclear role within the European Union.

The euro extended its recent stellar run to hit 0.8575 sterling, its highest since late 2011, on Tuesday. The pound fell to $1.5687, near a five-month low.

"The UK is a small open economy that has benefited from capital inflows because it is not in the euro area but is in the EU. The former is less helpful now, the uncertainty about the latter is a clear negative. The result could be to take EUR/GBP close to 0.90 before long-term downtrend resumes," said Kit Juckes, FX strategist at Societe Generale in a note.

Commodities were underpinned by a more positive global growth outlook.

"I don't think there's much downside risk," said Tetsu Emori, a commodities fund manager at Astmax Investments in Tokyo. "I think economic data out of the United States has improved, so I don't think there are any negative factors in the market."

U.S. crude rose 0.4 percent to $96.80 a barrel and Brent inched up 0.1 percent to $113.64.

London copper gained 0.4 percent to $8,078 a tonne.

Gold inched up 0.4 percent to $1,661.95 an ounce but was capped by receding investor appetite for safe-haven assets.

Asian credit markets lagged the region's rallying equities, pushing the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index wider by 2 basis points.

Ford posts strongest pre-tax profit in over a decade

8 hrs.

Ford Motor says it made the highest fourth-quarter pre-tax profit in more than a decade. It earned $1.7 billion last quarter, due largely to increases sales of trucks and SUVs and higher prices for all models.

That was 31 cents a share, beating Wall Street forecasts which had ranged from 25 to 28 cents.

For all of 2012, the automaker?s net income was $5.7 billion, down $307 million than a year ago. It excludes some special charges.

The Detroit Bureau: Ford, Daimler and Nissan form fuel cell alliance

?The Ford team delivered strong results once again, underscoring that our One Ford plan is working,? proclaimed Alan Mulally, Ford president and CEO. ?We are well positioned for another strong year in 2013, as we continue our plan to serve customers in all markets around the world with a full family of vehicles ? small, medium and large; cars, utilities and trucks ? with the very best quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value.?

Revenue last quarter was $36.5 billion, up $1.9 billion from the same period a year ago. For 2012, revenue was $134.3 billion, down $2 billion from a year ago.

Trucks, mainly sold in North America, drove profits hard enough to overcome European losses ? which were substantial, and more than the maker had forecast just a few months ago.

The Detroit Bureau: Toyota officially reclaims global sales crown

In the quarter, Ford reported European losses of 732 Million, against a loss of $190 million the previous year. For all of 2012 Ford?s European loss climbed to $1.73 billion. The automaker had forecast about $1.5 billion when it discussed third-quarter earnings three months ago.

In North America, Ford said it made $1.87 billion in the quarter ? twice as much as the $889 million on it posted a year earlier. Revenue for the quarter was $22.1 billion, up $2.5 billion.

For the year, North American profit was $8.34 billion, before taxes.

The Detroit Bureau: 2013 care sales off to good start

Ford showed a preview of the 2015 F-150 at the Detroit auto show earlier this month, hoping to tempt prospective buyers into waiting instead of buying General Motors new Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra, on sale first half this year.

Ford also wanted to raise doubts in shoppers? minds about spending now for Chrysler Group?s Ram pickup, revised for 2013 and winner of the North American Truck of the Year earlier this month, an award bestowed by 49 U.S. and Canadian auto journalists.

Ford had reported a loss of $468 million in Europe last quarter and warned that losses were mounting. The automaker has announced plans to close three European plants by 2014, but said last quarter that it would lose $1.5 billion in 2012 and again this year, and doesn?t expect black ink from European operations until about 2015.

Primates, too, can move in unison

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Japanese researchers show for the first time that primates modify their body movements to be in tune with others, just like humans do. Humans unconsciously modify their movements to be in synchrony with their peers. For example, we adapt our pace to walk in step or clap in unison at the end of a concert. This phenomenon is thought to reflect bonding and facilitate human interaction. Researchers from the RIKEN Brain Science Institute report that pairs of macaque monkeys also spontaneously coordinate their movements to reach synchrony.

This research opens the door to much-needed neurophysiological studies of spontaneous synchronization in monkeys, which could shed light into human behavioral dysfunctions such as those observed in patients with autism spectrum disorders, echopraxia and echolalia -- where patients uncontrollably imitate others.

In the research, recently published in the journal Scientific Reports, the team led by Naotaka Fujii developed an experimental set-up to test whether pairs of Japanese macaque monkeys synchronize a simple push-button movement.

Before the experiment, the monkeys were trained to push a button with one hand. In a first experiment the monkeys were paired and placed facing each other and the timing of their push-button movements was recorded. The same experiment was repeated but this time each monkey was shown videos of another monkey pushing a button at varying speeds. And in a last experiment the macaques were not allowed to either see or hear their video-partner.

The results show that the monkeys modified their movements -- increased or decreased the speed of their push-button movement -- to be in synchrony with their partner, both when the partner was real and on video. The speed of the button pressing movement changed to be in harmonic or sub-harmonic synchrony with the partners' speed. However, different pairs of monkeys synchronized differently and reached different speeds, and the monkeys synchronized their movements the most when they could both see and hear their partner.

The researchers note that this behavior cannot have been learnt by the monkeys during the experiment, as previous research has shown that it is extremely difficult for monkeys to learn intentional synchronization.

They add: "The reasons why the monkeys showed behavioral synchronization are not clear. It may be a vital aspect of other socially adaptive behavior, important for survival in the wild."

The study was partly supported by Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas 'Neural creativity for communication' (22120522 and 24120720) of MEXT, Japan.

Final salary pension schemes close at record rate

LONDON (Reuters) - UK companies closed final salary-based pension schemes at a record rate last year as funds struggled against rock bottom returns on their staple investments and growing life expectancy, the National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF) said on Monday.

Firms closed 31 percent of so-called defined benefit (DB) pension pots, compared with 23 percent in 2011.

Only 13 percent of DB schemes in the private sector were open to new joiners, down one third from 19 percent in 2011 and against 43 percent in 2005 when NAPF started keeping records.

Just over half of the schemes still open to new members said they were "considering further changes in the next few years".

DB pension schemes have been grappling with spiralling deficits amid pressure from an ageing workforce, red tape from the European Union and the UK government and lacklustre investment returns, NAPF said in its 2012 Annual Survey.

Over the last three years, 375 billion pounds of quantitative easing by the Bank of England has contributed to a sharp drop in the yield on British government bonds, key investments for pension pots.

The deficit of British final-salary linked company pension schemes more than doubled to 231 billion pounds in 2012, according to the Pension Protection Fund (PPF).

Meanwhile, EU legislation requiring funds to have enough cash to cover employee pensions if a company goes bust may stop British firms offering final-salary linked pensions altogether.

The proposed rules would force British firms to find an extra 300 billion pounds to strengthen pension pots.

DB pensions, linked to an employee's salary at retirement and length of service, are typically more expensive to provide than other annuity-purchase schemes.

The NAPF survey comes amid major changes to the pensions sector. Last October, the government introduced an "auto-enrolment" scheme to draw up to 10 million more people into a workplace pension.

The government is also considering a new type of pension scheme to encourage more people to save for retirement.

26/444 Healing from Infidelity: Play and the Message of the Affair

Chili hasn't been with us for a couple years now but I still love this pic. Chili

Most relationships begin with a lot of play. Couples truly enjoy one another in an atmosphere of fun. Ann and I had lost that. In trying to be a good Christian man I decided that our spare time would be family time. This sounded good to me. The decision left a deep part of my wife neglected. We didn't have fun time together alone.

Our relationship had become dull. We were busy doing lots of good, kind meaningful activities. We had fun with others and fun with our kids. Together we paid bills, taught Sunday school, fed the dog, watched TV etc. Part of Ann's affair and most affairs is recapturing fun, a sense of life, even if it is outside what one knows to be true and right. The intoxication of feeling alive again overshadows all else. Ann desired for that feeling of life again in our marriage.

Her desire was good. The direction she chose to pursue it wasn't. ?

Before we figured out how to bring that back into our relationship, or maybe even know that we needed to, another man showed up with time to give and enjoyed fun times with Ann. Making it through an affair involves understanding the message it was sending about the marriage. I resisted wanting to use 'the messages of the affair' for a while. I had a choice of whether to learn from the most painful experience of my life or to stay resentful.

It wasn't a linear process but eventually I chose to learn. Ann and I recaptured a sense of play in the midst of doing all the day to day of life. We like to be goofy together. We tickle. We joke. We laugh at ourselves. We flirt. I like flirting with her. And we like to be silly with our dog Chili by putting brightly colored ribbons on his head.

Along with the launch of their new website, ParknPool has also made some changes in their staff.

Lexington, VA (PRWEB) January 25, 2013

For the first time in ParknPool?s history, they headed into the New Year with five account managers instead of the standard four. With an expectation of a rise of sales, both online and by phone, it became necessary to add a fifth account manager.

As the leading online and catalog distributor of commercial grade furnishings and site amenities such as picnic tables, park benches, bleachers and playgrounds, it is important for ParknPool to have the knowledgeable staff available to answer the many questions of their existing and potential clients. They take pride in their customer service abilities and have used this skill to set them apart from their competitors. Ryan McClure, ParknPool?s newest account manager, began his career with ParknPool as the customer service representative. Ryan, who is originally from New Jersey, moved to Lexington, VA at a very young age and is excited for the opportunity he has been given to help clients. ?I am looking forward to the 2013 season as an account manager, I can?t wait to begin building my client list and helping others with their purchases,? explained Ryan.

Gilmore Ayres, like Ryan, began his career in the customer service position and was promoted to an account manager position in 2012. Gil is a Lexington, VA native and enjoys spending time outdoors as well as selling outdoor furniture. ?I used 2012 as a year to gain the knowledge needed in order to fully educate my clients throughout the entire buying process. I am excited to use that knowledge as we head into 2013,? stated Gil. According to the National Park Service of Great Falls, ?Gil?s knowledge of your products, professionalism and willingness to ensure customer satisfaction was and is appealing to our organization. Your customer service is very consistent.? As the most experienced account manager, Tammy Bryant came to ParknPool from the health care profession. Her experience and heart for helping people are exhibited to all of her clients. ?I enjoy helping each and every phone call and online visitor that makes their way to my desk. It is rewarding to receive pictures of an area that I helped to furnish,? said Tammy when asked what she liked most about being a ParknPool account manager. ?Working with Tammy on all of our outdoor projects has been a joy! She?s very customer service oriented and goes above and beyond to make my job (and hers) as easy as possible,? stated Fox River Resort in response to a client survey.

As an Army veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, Chris Lopez, has been an account manager at ParknPool for the better part of a year. ?Chris answered all my questions and was very helpful in the entire process. I look forward to doing business with him and your company again,? complimented RPI Design Goods. Chris enjoys applying the variety of skills he learned while being in the armed forces to help his clients. ?After coming to ParknPool by way of the military, it is definitely a much more relaxed environment to work in. All of my clients are great to deal with,? explained Chris. As one of ParknPool?s leading account managers, Sarah Dudley is originally from Lexington, VA and though she moved away for a brief time, is now back in the area. When asked what she enjoys about her job, she excitedly remarked, ?It?s important, at the end of the day, that you take pride in what you do on a daily basis. It?s not every day that I get to truly make a difference but when the occasion arises, it makes it all worthwhile. After helping to save a Tennessee high school homecoming with bleachers, Sarah was complimented with this remark by the White House Heritage High School Booster Club, ?Sarah was responsive and cared about our school and community ? we couldn?t have achieved our goal without her!?

Educating and serving their clients, is very important to ParknPool and they are excited with the account managers that they have in place to further exceed expectations and enhance earnings. Why You Need Car Insurance | INWD

There are more drivers hitting the road every year. As this number goes up, the chances of a car wreck will also increase. If you get in a car crash, the auto insurance you own can make a big difference in how much you have to pay. But why do you need insurance and just how much do you need? Auto insurance provides you with protection from paying for damage or injury you cause others while you are driving, damage to your vehicle or personal injury or injury to your passengers from a crash, plus certain other incidents, such as theft. No matter where you live, you will need to purchase some variety of auto insurance. Deciding to drive without insurance could mean you have to repair or replace a stolen or damaged vehicle or pay the cost of any damage for which you might be responsible. Liability: It pays for the expenses you have caused to others in a car accident, including injury and property damage. If you are sued, it also pays your legal fees. Recommended, more comprehensive levels of liability insurance can be purchased that cover more than the lower, state-mandated insurance. Personal Injury Protection: Personal injury insurance is required in some states and is optional in others. Sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage, this pays the medical treatment for you or your passengers regardless of who was at fault. This insurance can also pay for lost earnings, service replacement and funeral expenses. The minimum amount of personal injury protection is typically set by the state. Medical Payments: This coverage is available in states that are not considered no-fault; it will pay despite who may have been at fault. This insurance will pay for all insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical or funeral expenses for bodily injury from a crash. Collision: This pays for damage to your vehicle caused by an accident. Comprehensive: Cover your vehicle from all non-collision damages when you buy this type of coverage. This may include protection from theft, vandalism, and fire or flood damage. Uninsured Motorist: This pays for repair and replacement costs when someone with insurance is injured in an accident caused by another person who does not have liability coverage. Under-Insured Motorist: There are other drivers who have liability insurance that might not be able to pay for all the expenses they are responsible for. Under-insured motorist coverage protects you in accidents involving those drivers. Other types of coverage, such as emergency road service, are also available. What you pay for auto insurance varies based on the company and will depend on multiple factors, such as: *Your selected coverage *Your vehicle?s make and model * Whether or not you have been in an accident * Your age, sex and marital status * Where you live Some people think they can get by without auto insurance, but it is honestly something you don?t want to live without. Evaluate your needs, research your options, and with the guidance of your insurance agency, choose the option that best suits you. Auto insurance Oakland

Huawei Was Top Third Smartphone Vendor In Q4 After Samsung & Apple, Says IDC

Huawei Ascend G16IDC's Q4 report on the global mobile phone market reveals that Huawei sprang up into the top-three smartphone vendors in the world, a first for the company. In Q4, Huawei held a 4.9 percent marketshare based on unit shipments. This is much less than the 29 percent chunk held by Samsung and Apple's 21.8 percent slice, but still places Huawei ahead of Sony and ZTE. In the 2012 calendar year, Huawei was number four among the top five smartphone vendors by market share, after Samsung, Apple and Nokia, but ahead of Research In Motion.

Condo Insurance 101: Tips From ProInsurance | Bay Area Real ...

Drawing of an umbrella in the rainAre you planning to buy a condominium or co-op?

Insurance needs for condos and co-ops are different than for other types of property. ProInsurance, a Bay Area brokerage and Pacific Union International?s insurance partner, offers the following advice for condo and co-op owners:

TWO SEPARATE POLICIES
If you have a mortgage,?your bank will require insurance to protect its investment in your home. However, you may need additional coverage for personal items, liability, or fees for shared areas of the building, such as the lobby.

You will need two separate policies to protect your investment:

Your own insurance policy: This provides coverage for your personal possessions, structural improvements to your apartment, and additional living expenses if you are the victim of fire, theft, or another disaster listed in your policy. You also get liability protection.

A ?master policy? provided by the condo/co-op board: This covers the common areas you share with others in your building like the roof, basement, elevator, boiler, and walkways for both liability and physical damage.

KNOW WHAT YOU?RE LIABLE FOR
To adequately insure your unit, it is important to know which structural parts of your home the condo or co?op association covers ? and which it doesn?t. You can do this by reading your association?s bylaws or proprietary lease. If you have questions, talk with your condo association, insurance professional, or family attorney.

Sometimes the association is responsible for insuring the individual condo or co?op units, as they were originally built, including standard fixtures. The individual owner, in this case, is only responsible for alterations to the original structure, like remodeling the kitchen or bathtub.

Sometimes this includes not only improvements you make, but those the previous owners made.

In other situations, the condo or co?op association insures only the bare walls, floor, and ceiling. The owner must insure kitchen cabinets, built?in appliances, plumbing, wiring, bathroom fixtures, etc.

ADDITIONAL COVERAGE
Also ask your insurance professional about the following additional coverage:

Unit assessment: This reimburses you for your share of an assessment charged to all unit owners as the result of a covered loss. For instance, if there is a fire in the lobby, all unit owners would share repair costs.

Water backup: This insures your property for sewer- or drainage-backup damage. Policies don?t always include water backup damage, so check to make sure it?s in there.

Umbrella liability: This is an inexpensive way to get more liability protection and broader coverage than a standard condo/co?op policy includes.

Flood or earthquake: If you live in an area prone to these disasters, you will need to purchase separate flood and earthquake policies. Flood insurance is available through FEMA?s National Flood Insurance Program. You can buy both flood and earthquake insurance through your insurance agent.

Floater or endorsement: If you own expensive jewelry, furs, or collectibles, you might consider getting additional coverage since there is generally a $1,000 to $2,000 limit for theft of jewelry on a standard policy.

When purchasing insurance, it is important to find an agent or company that specializes in condominiums or co?ops. Also, don?t forget to ask about all available discounts.

You can reduce your rates by raising your deductibles and by installing a smoke and fire-alarm system that rings at an outside service. If you insure your unit with the same company that underwrites your building?s insurance policy, you might also get an additional reduction in premiums.

Gay marriage faces struggle in Democratic bastion Rhode Island

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (Reuters) - A bill to make gay marriage legal in Rhode Island, one of the most Democratic states, was expected to be passed by the state's House of Representatives on Thursday but faces an uphill battle in the state Senate.

The legislation, supported by Governor Lincoln Chafee, aims to make Rhode Island the 10th state in the nation and the last in New England to legalize gay weddings.

Democratic Representative Arthur Handy, lead sponsor of the bill, said he expected "a very solid majority" to vote for the legislation after a debate late Thursday afternoon.

"I think the momentum in Rhode Island is indicative of what we're seeing across the country," he said, noting that President Barack Obama had mentioned same-sex marriage in his inaugural address on Monday.

Handy has introduced the legislation every year since 2003, following efforts by another lawmaker who began putting it forward in 1997.

Rhode Island was left as the last of New England's six states without a law allowing gay and lesbian couples to wed after Maine legalized same-sex marriage late last year.

Nine of the 50 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia have legalized gay marriage. Maryland was the most recent, with gay marriage becoming legal there on January 1.

Another 31 states have passed constitutional amendments restricting marriage to heterosexual couples.

In Rhode Island, it was unclear how the legislation would fare in the Senate, though Handy said in the last election cycle both houses had elected more "pro-equality" candidates than ever before.

The state Senate president, Teresa Paiva Weed, opposes gay marriage, but has said she will allow a Senate judiciary committee vote on the bill if it passes in the House.

Senate spokesman Greg Pare said predictions that a Senate vote on the bill would be close had not changed.

Novel approaches needed to end growing scourge of 'superbugs'

Jan. 23, 2013 ? With the rising awareness of the so-called "superbugs," bacteria that are resistant to most known antibiotics, three infectious disease experts writing in the Jan. 24 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine called for novel approaches based on a "reconceptualization of the nature of resistance, disease and prevention."

"Antibiotic-resistant microbes infect more than 2 million Americans every year and kill more than 100,000 annually," said Brad Spellberg, M.D., a Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center lead researcher and one of the authors of the viewpoint article published in the New England Journal of Medicine. "They spread rapidly, even in such seemingly harmless places as high school locker rooms, where they infect young athletes, and they can make mundane urinary or intestinal infections life-threatening. At the same time, the development of new antibiotics to treat these infections is plummeting, leading to our call for entirely new approaches to the problem."

Dr. Spellberg, author of the book, "Rising Plague: The Global Threat from Deadly Bacteria and Our Dwindling Arsenal to Fight Them," authored the article with Drs. John G. Bartlett and David N. Gilbert, both past presidents of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

The article's authors called for continuing the traditional practices in "infection control, antibiotic stewardship, and new antibiotic development." But they also write that the World Economic Forum's recent conclusion that antibiotic-resistant bacteria represent "arguably the greatest risk?to human health" underscores the need for new approaches as well.

New interventions are needed "to prevent infections from occurring in the first place, to encourage new economic models that spur investment in anti-infective treatments, to slow the spread of resistance in order to prolong the useful lives of antibiotics, to discover new ways to directly attack microbes in a manner that does not drive resistance, or to alter host-microbe interactions in order to modify disease without directly attacking microbes," the researchers wrote.

Among their recommendations are stricter monitoring and controls for prescribing antibiotics and changes in hospital practices, including greater disinfection and less usage of invasive materials than can transmit antibiotic-resistant bacteria into the body.

They recommended new regulatory approaches to encourage antibiotic development, such as the Limited Population Antibiotic Drug (LPAD) proposal from the Infectious Diseases Society of America. They said this proposal would encourage the development new antibiotics by allowing their approval based on smaller, less expensive clinical trials.

They also called for new approaches to treating infections caused by bacteria. Rather than attacking the microbes causing the infection, the researchers urged scientists to pursue new courses of discovery that either "moderate the inflammatory response to infection or that limit microbial growth by blocking access to host resources without attempting to kill microbes."

"The converging crises of increasing resistance and collapse of antibiotic research and development are the predictable results of policies and processes we have used to deal with infections for 75 years," the authors write. "If we want a long-term solution, the answer is not incremental tweaking of these policies and processes. Novel approaches, based on a reconceptualization of the nature of resistance, disease, and prevention, are needed."

Supersized court challenge to New York City's ban on big, sugary sodas

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The beverage and restaurant industries on Wednesday urged a New York judge to block Mayor Michael Bloomberg's ban on large sugary drinks, calling it an unconstitutional overreach that burdens small businesses and infringes upon personal liberty.

The ban, scheduled to go into effect in March, outlaws the sale of sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces from New York City's restaurants and many other eateries in an effort to combat obesity. City officials have said they will not begin imposing $200 fines on offending businesses until June.

James Brandt, a lawyer for the American Beverage Association, which represents companies like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Dr Pepper Snapple Group, told Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Milton Tingling that the ban, approved last September by the city's health board, represents an illegal end-run around the city council.

"What makes this ban patently offensive is that the regulation at issue is promulgated by the Board of Health, a group of civil servants who are not elected by the citizens, who are appointed by the mayor of New York and as a practical matter serve at his discretion," Brandt said.

City attorney Mark Muschenheim, however, said the health board has the legal authority to pass regulations to protect the "safety, health and well-being" of the city's residents.

The ban is the latest initiative in Bloomberg's years-long quest to use the city's regulatory power to improve public health. During his tenure, the city has outlawed smoking in bars and restaurants; required chain restaurants to post calorie counts; and barred the use of trans fats in food preparation.

The city has defended the rule as a reasonable measure to address the growing problem of obesity.

"There is an association between sugary drinks and obesity," said Thomas Merrill, a lawyer for the health department.

Tingling did not indicate when he will rule, and Brandt said the plaintiffs will soon move separately for an emergency stay.

Minority organizations like the NAACP and a New York pro-business group have filed court papers in support of the challenge, expressing concern about the ban's potential impact on small and minority-owned businesses. Several city council members also oppose the regulation.

Meanwhile, public health advocacy groups have joined in the city's defense.

Brandt told Tingling that the ban favors certain businesses at the expense of others. The regulation only applies to food service businesses under the aegis of the health department, which means convenience and grocery stores will not be affected.

Cup and bottle manufacturers have complained that many of their products barely run afoul of the ban. A 500-milliliter glass bottle, for instance, used by certain drink makers, is 16.9 ounces, while "16-ounce" cups are typically a shade larger so that restaurants don't have to fill them to the brim.

The ban exempts drinks that contain more than 50 percent milk, which means milkshakes or high-calorie frozen coffee drinks will also be allowed, Brandt said.

"You'll be able to go into a 7-Eleven and buy the biggest Big Gulp you want, but you're not able to go to a Sabrett hot dog stand and buy a 20-ounce Coke or Pepsi," Brandt said.

But Thomas Merrill, a lawyer for the health department, said the regulation may not be a "silver bullet" but represents a positive step in reducing obesity.

"The perfect cannot be the enemy of the good," he said.

Brandt also warned that the ban, if allowed, could eventually lead to even more restrictive regulations.

"What comes next? Red meat twice a week but no more?" Brandt said. "No jay-walking?"

Tingling interrupted him with a smile.

"For the record, counsel, jay-walking is illegal," he said, drawing laughs from the gallery.

The case is New York Statewide Coalition of Hispanic Chambers of Commerce et al. v. New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, New York State Supreme Court, New York County, No. 653584/2012.
